mamato3
Any recommendations for early readers (~grade 1 level) without pictures. I think the pictures are a big distraction and I want to try dd reading books without pictures. . . Thanks!
Mandylubug
I ended up putting post it notes over them and allowing them to remove and look after reading that page. Naturally, this is easier with some books. Books that the entire page next to reading is a picture, I place a piece of paper. Also works as a good bookmark

Jennifer-72
This probably won't be the case for you, but since I have the industrial strength version of a easily distracted child, I had to resort to photocopying readers with the pictures covered up. He would just obsess on why a post it note was there and try to lift it up. I only needed to do a couple that way as I was using it more to gauge his comprehension. When dd was that age/stage, I wrote her little books that she had to illustrate herself after she read the sentence on the page. That was pretty sweet. :)
geodob
Though this makes me think of the other side of this? Where as we read something, we can form a mental picture of what we are reading about. The ability to form mental pictures, takes around 8 years to fully develop. While you can remove the pictures. Perhaps you have her read something, and then help her to take what she read and form a mental picture with it?
Ottakee
Check out the I See Sam books. www.iseesam.com and www.3rsplus.com You can also find the first 2 sets on line to print off for free at http://marriottmd.com/sam They DO have pictures BUT and this is huge, the kids can NOT figure out the words by "reading" the pictures. The pictures carry the story along but they were specifically designed so that the kids can't read the pictures to figure out the words.
