mommatomany
I'm looking into using LLATL for next year for 5th grader and 3rd and 2nd grader. But then I stumbled upon zaner Blosers grammar and it looks good to but there are hardly any reviews. We currently use ZB's spelling and love it. Thoughts on either program or can anyone compare them? Thanks!
Susie in MS
I have never heard of ZB so I can't compare for you. sorry. Hopefully someone can. I know many people look down on LLATL and say it is not enough. It has always been plenty for my dd. The spelling looks scant because it is not a list of 20 words. It is a list of 6 (depending on the level) that focus on a rule, to which you add any misspelled words from your child's work. This helps the child to focus on words he needs to. Grammar will not be a whole page of labeling sentences, and only the Green level will have any diagramming. These things are all pluses to me, but if they don't set well with you then ZB may be the better choice? Copywork/dictation is weekly. Poetry and writing are covered as well. I don't know if you have been to the http://www.cspress.com/ website, but there is the s&s for each level as well as placement test. You may want to check those out if you haven't because, depending on which other program you have used, your child may place a year above. mommatomany
I noticed from another thread you use POAG too. We use it and love it! Do you think POAG and LLATL would go well together?
Susie in MS
I don't know that they go together, really. They don't clash, but they don't mesh either. Did that make any sense? There are a few days that both LLATL and POAG both assign a writing assignment. I choose between the two -or- put one off if I want my dd to do them both. jrstarfleetacademy
We have used GUM for the past two years (grades 2 and now 3) and love it. The lessons are quick and there is no busy work. It is a very straightforward program. I assign all the exercises plus reviews in the back of the book. Retention is pretty good and I've noticed that her overall composition abilities have grown. If I can answer any questions I'd be happy to. Even though we like it I'm considering a move to CLE Language Arts for the benefit of an all in one though I will still have to add composition. mom2agang
Phonetic zoo. I also had a child that age terrible at spelling. This program made spelling encouraging.
Hunter
TWTM 1st edition recommends GUM as their secular grammar suggestion as an alternative to the primary suggestion of Abeka.
