happyWImom
My local P.O. makes it almost impossible to send things media mail, and always seems to give us a hassle. We don't even tape up our pkgs. because they would open them every time, and I've had them refuse to send things, etc... Today, dh took a box for me, and I stated "Send this insured MM for such & such and amount." He brings me home a receipt and I see $26.00!!! It was a box full of MFW stuff, including 2 unopened cd's. According to dh, she glanced in the box, said "There are cd's in there, this can't go MM." I would have demanded to see their sheet with the MM criteria on it, but dd said there were people behind him, he didn't want to make a fuss, etc... (and btw, do it yourself the next time :D ) I've been searching on-line, and everything I've looked at has said cd's can go MM. Have I missed something??? MeAndTheBoys
says sound recordings are okay-- Sound recordings, including incidental announcements of recordings and guides or scripts prepared solely for use with such recordings. Video recordings and player piano rolls are classified as sound recordings. http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm#1113509 Sorry your husband got burned :( Sounds like they did you wrong this time for sure-- Betsy

I am going to bring back my receipt on Monday and ask them to pay the difference; it's ridiculous.
Jamee
I'd carry regs with you when you go. Maybe also report your PO. Sorry this has happened.
Peaceful Isle
Oh wow, I have sent CDs many times media mail. Sounds like the post office didn't know what they were talking about! That's a lot of money you had to shell out. :( what a bummer.
Moxie
This is why I quit selling stuff. It is rarely worth the hassle.
stripe
Also, if you have a big box of things and they refused CDs (which I think should be allowed to go media, but let's just say they didn't), it would be cheaper to take those out and mail via first class separately, and send the books via media. I just bought something and she quoted me $5 to send; when it arrived she'd sent it via parcel post. It was a book in binder form -- I'm assuming she was told it couldn't go media mail. In this case, the difference was $1-2, but I think the seller was misled. Either that or she's afraid to send via media due to crummy service in the past. Pawz4me
I'm with the others, I believe CDs can go media mail. I love the postmistress of our little somewhat country PO. She takes a "don't ask, don't tell" approach to media mail.
Farrar
But for some reason, I've read flash cards can't. MM is just bizarre to me.
CrunchyGirl
Is MM available through click and ship? You log in online and print your postage then you dump it in the mail box and never talk to anyone.
stripe
Is MM available through click and ship? You log in online and print your postage then you dump it in the mail box and never talk to anyone. No. I used to do it via Paypal when someone had sent me money for something, and I've read online that some people figured out how to do it when you didn't make a paypal sale, but I never tried. I'd love to do it and save time; I send books to an elderly relative. Although usually the package is heavier than my scale can measure....oh well. I saw this article http://www.genuineseller.com/create-shipping-labels-with-paypal-for-non-ebay-packages and followed the instructions, and I am pulling up a page at www.paypal.com/shipnow (sign in) that looks like I can do it. RootAnn
I almost always look up the postage at home before taking it to the local post office because they almost always say it has to go more expensively than my research says. When I call them on it, they "find" the less expensive option. :cursing: Are they getting a commission or something? :confused1: Media Mail has gotten a lot more picky within the past year. I tried to send our ITBS test books back w/filled out answer sheets and the PO lady said the answer sheets couldn't go in there if I was sending it Media Mail. If they weren't filled out, I could include them. :gnorsi:
nukeswife
You can't use USPS click n ship for anything other than Priority or Express, I use Paypal's multi-order shipping to ship things not paid for with paypal all the time. CDs most certainly are media mail as they are sound recordings. I'm thinking some of these postal workers are getting CDs confused with video games which now also come on CDs. They may also be confusing Media Mail with Library mail, the latter used to be called "Book Rate" and was only for books.

Yes, when dh first told me, I said he should have taken them out & I would have sent them separately. He doesn't think the same way I do, however...... ;)

He doesn't think the same way I do, however...... ;) It's not obvious, and the postal rules have their own logic. I've saved $5 or more by switching from my own small box to a larger, flat rate box; I also once shipped four magazines, two each in two flat rate envelopes instead of one big package (this was international) and other such things. happyWImom
Dh went back today. The woman who he dealt with Sat. wasn't working-of course! He spoke with the supervisor who admitted that yes, they should have gone MM but nothing could be done now. No refund, nothing. She would "speak" to the woman he dealt with. Also, when he expressed his unhappiness she said "Well, if you doubted her, you shouldn't have sent it."  I know I should just let this go, and I probably would if they hadn't given us grief numerous times regarding MM stuff. It's like they are annoyed and put out that we are sending this stuff. I always feel like I'm doing something wrong or being dishonest somehow-trying to pull a fast one by shipping my stuff MM, the more inexpensive way. Give me a break! Anyway, I am worked up and not going to let it rest. The only bad thing is, small town.... I don't know. Sigh.

Wow, that response from the postal worker is... :glare:   :banghead: This has made me very thankful for our local PO and the sweet little ol' lady who never gives me grief about anything (I'm in there, shipping something MM, at least once a week.) If I were in your situation, I'd PRINT OUT the USPS MM regulations to bring with me each time. Be prepared to "argue" your cause. :)
