Read Along Books and CDs vs digital and audio?

Recommended Posts

I know of Learningally.org

We are in the process of having our membership approved there. I was just wondering what others have found more useful? The girls still love picture books and I have a few of the Disney Read Along books with CD. They adore them. However, I would like to get them reading along with chapter books, too. They are currently reading along with SOTW and listening to the audio. Or I am reading and they are following along with me.

Do you find your child likes having the physical book in hand while listening to the audio? Or do they like having the digital version in front of them while listening?

My DD likes the physical book in hand.  But she has never done well with audio cd's.  I think she has some sort of auditory processing issue or working memory issue (or both).  No one else thinks so, but she gets so confused and lost when she listens to audio cds. If I am reading I can slow down, emphasize words, pause to discuss vocabulary, etc. when I see her getting confused.  When she is reading on her own, cd audio coupled with the text throws her off.  She does better just reading in a very quiet room with a physical book.  I plan to try her out with the Immersion Reading that DS is doing instead of text to speech or audio cd with book, just to see if it works better for her.  I just haven't done it yet.

DS, probably because he is not yet at her reading level, prefers to read through Immersion Reading on the Kindle Fire by a long shot over audio cds or me reading to him (although he likes those too).  He reads voraciously through IR.  He loves the voices on most of the books he has read and he can plug in his headphones so he isn't bothering anyone else if they are doing other things in the same room.  He also likes that if he needs to look away at something he can do it while still listening to the book but then when he looks back at the screen again it is still highlighting text as it reads so he can find his place again quickly.

We aren't using Learning Ally.  (although I am looking into it for more options at a lower cost).  I buy books for the Kindle that have the Immersion Reading option.  If you buy the book first, then it gives you the option to purchase the paired, profession audio at a significantly reduced rate.  The text is highlighted as the words are spoken.  Works really well, even though I HATE that the highlighting is gray.  For me that makes it much harder to see the word because of my poor eyesight.   I much preferred the Wordly Wise highlighting where the paragraph is in one color and the word being spoken is highlighted in yellow.  The black text really shows up better that way.  It doesn't seem to bother DS so he uses it whenever possible.  It gets costly though....

Ok! We don't have fires. We have galaxy tabs. I went ahead and signed one girl up with ally. Any reason for 2 accounts?

She is allowed 4 books till fully verified and I've played a bit with it. The yellow hurt her eyes and makes them water or so she says. We are trying out a peachy color highlight in the app. So far, she loves it.

DS likes the gray but I haven't found a way to adjust the color anyway.  I wish I could.  My eyes get so tired.  Enlarging the font really helps but gray highlighting just kills me.  I could see how bright yellow could be an eye strain for many, though.

We actually bought the Kindle Fire at Christmas as a gift for the kids (on sale) but they didn't end up using it until a few weeks ago.  They had no interest.  I felt kind of like we had wasted our money since DH didn't use it, the kids didn't use it, and I still prefer using my really ancient, crack across the bottom, first run Kindle most of the time  (back lit screens cause more eyestrain for me than the electronic paper of my original Kindle).  But for DS's bday we got him the first Percy Jackson book on audio cd and he loved it but I realized he really needed to be SEEING the words for additional reinforcement of spelling/sentence structure/vocabulary etc. so I got the Kindle version with the Immersion Reading, put it on the Kindle Fire and he LOVED it.

By the way, I don't THINK you would need two accounts for Learning Ally, but I don't know for certain...
