momto2Cs
I am very much looking forward to sharing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with both children (ages 11 and 13) over the next year, along with other related lit, but at the same time, I am sorely tempted to add in Journeys Through Bookland, specifically vol 3 for my (late to reading) dd and vol 5 for ds, as it references King Arthur, etc, and may be a good compliment to the family lit studies. Is this just far too much, or doable?
Dolphin
It depends on your kids. My ds 11 just read the entire series on Narnia in 9 days. He is a fast reader and he reads on his own a lot. If you were doing it as read alouds and/or your kids are slower with reading that could be a lot. (By the way, my kid is not super kid, he has fought to get to average in math and spelling, he just devours books)

TracyP
I agree that it should be doable. You could do 1 Ch. of Tolkien per day read on own + (whatever amount) in JtB + additional works related to LOTR read aloud by you. Or some variation that works for your family. happypamama
That sounds doable. My children listen to family readalouds or audiobooks and also have their own daily reading selections.
