skimomma Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 I am looking for an independent typing program for an almost-11yo to use over the summer. She needs to be typing well enough to be able to take timed quizzes/exams for an online course in the fall. We have tried a few free typing tutor programs and have not been impressed. I do confess that we were not consistent so that is surely part of the problem. I don't mind a reasonable cost and we will have a schedule to fix the consistency issue. Ali in OR Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 We've been using Mavis Beacon simply because it works on a mac (Typing Instructor Deluxe I believe is the other program mentioned a lot, but it does not work on a mac). My kids enjoy the exercises (actually they like the silly games best). I haven't pushed it or monitored it enough to ensure that they're really making progress, but if your dd is motivated to learn to type for this class, this program would certainly work for her. It has a nice format, tracks multiple users as they earn stamps in a passport, runs well, and all my kids enjoy the typing games. We have the PC version but it is available for Mac. PeterPan Posted April 20, 2014 Share Posted April 20, 2014 Yup, Mavis Beacon for mac. But just as a note, I'm not sure about how quickly kids become proficient or what wpm you'll get to at that age. My dd struggled, even though we had been working on typing for years with a variety of programs. I got Mavis Beacon, switched her to the Dvorak keyboard layout, gave her an email acct, and put it all on a user account on the computer with a password lock on mine so she couldn't get back to QWERTY. With that motivation, oh and paying her the $1/WPM any month she increased by at least 5, she went from 8-ish to 35-40 in 3 months. :hurray: So for us it took more carrots, guess you could say... PS.
