Printable procedure list for fractions? UPDATED

Recommended Posts

x post from k-8 board

I thought someone over here might be able to help. I am looking for a printable procedure list(s) for my dd to use while working with fractions. She seems to be able to do the math but is getting completely lost in the steps. I want to be able to print off different step by step lists that she can have in front of her to help her solve the problem. This should help her learn the actual steps but also help her feel more confident.

Any ideas if something like this is out there? I might be making them up today if not. :)

I don't know one off the top of my head but surely there ARE sources for that out there.  Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will respond.

You might also look at Key to Fractions.  I have been using it for review for myself since fractions was always a weak area for me.  Like your child, I understood the concepts but couldn't seem to keep the steps straight in my head.  I intend to use this system with the kids, too, once they are ready.  It takes fractions through all the steps, building on knowledge through little workbooks.  They don't look intimidating at all and the steps are right in the book.  Easy to use and fractions steps are easier for me to remember now that I have been doing those workbooks.

Best wishes.

Thank you for the feedback. I actually sent an email to the writer of her math book (since I love the way the book is written) and they offered to put together something for my dd. :hurray: The writer thought that it was a great idea and felt that others might benefit from it as well.

I will update when I have more info... :)

I hate to sound like a complete idiot but what math book?  :)

And yes, definitely others could benefit from a list/reference sheet.  Sign me up!  :)

Oh, I also found this.  It may be too small and not organized well enough.  I can't tell just from the image.  I use placemats for science and for other math reference material.  I have not gotten one for fractions, though.   I have found that using placemats means the material lasts quite a while (really sturdy) and can be written on with dry erase markers....

Learn Math Fast

She was using MUS Epsilon for the first part of the year and had gotten through almost half the book prior to her concussion in December. She had so much time off and didn't seem to retain a thing about fractions so I moved her over to this program. It's been a great fit! We are working in Vol. 2 which for the first part of the book is fractions and then it goes into decimals and percents. The lessons are easy to understand and not overwhelming. We will be continuing this program all the way through. And, the customer service is top notch! :hurray:

Just wanted to update: the author of Learn Math Fast sent me a sheet of steps this morning to try with my dd. I printed it out and had it ready for lesson time. I explained that I wanted her to try and use the steps to solve the problems without my help. Normally math takes over an hour and in yesterdays case that only meant completing 8 problems, and half of the lesson. Her job today was to complete 5 problems, all word problems using the step list.

WOW! She did it in less then half an hour! She had to ask me two questions (same question twice) about how to change the numerator but the rest went really well. She knew she had to change it just not sure of the how. She got all the answers correct just did not reduce them all the way, that was the only other problem she had. She loved the list, said it was so easy to use and really helped. So, yesterday one hour with me right at the table with her to today half the time with me in the kitchen! That never happens! And, word problems to boot! There were no tears, no frustration...no Mom! :hurray: I was actually baking churros while she worked.

I emailed the author about how our day went and I asked for information on how I can share when everything is finalized. So happy to report that this made a HUGE difference! :001_smile:

Hopefully the list will prove valuable day after day and that yesterday was not just a fluke. The author is going to see if she can add in something extra based on our experience yesterday and then said she would make it available on her website for free. I will post again when I know it's available. :001_rolleyes:

Here is the link to the free fraction printable that the author of Learn Math Fast provided for us. Hope it helps, it's helping us!

Fraction and Mixed Numbers Step-by-Step

I can't print it. I can get to full-page view, but when I print it I just get a few bullets and numbers. When I click on the word "Scribd," it tells me the document is private.

It looks really helpful, though. I'd just like to actually print it.
