FLVS AP Courses-anyone take them? Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Would love to hear from any Florida residents who have students who have taken the online AP courses via FLVS. Specifically, did they prepare your child well? Were they very challenging? Moderately challenging? Did you feel they were useful, or could you have done the prep work on your own? What about comparisons to PA Homeschoolers (if you've done courses with them)?

Thanks you!

This is old info, but fwiw...Feb 2009, I wrote to FLVS:

Good Morning,

Can you provide any statistics on the percentage of student who complete the AP classes that:
(a) Take the AP exam
( B) Receive 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Their response:

I am going to have to round off a bit on the percent of test takers. About 60% (a little less I think - maybe 58%)  of our AP students took the exam.   Of those:
14.7% made a 5
20.3% made a 4
20.3% made a 3
22.1% made a 2
22.6% made a 1

If you would like to give me a call we can provide some more complete data depending on the circumstances and your need.  We will be glad to assist.

I won't include the name, email, phone because that was years ago and surely it has changed.  I believe the rules have changed and now all students who take AP classes must take the exam.

I'm shocked I was able to find that quickly.  :thumbup1:

You might want to write to FLVS yourself and find out the current statistics.

HTH!  Good luck!

ETA:  I guess a 'b' followed by a ')' prints as a smiley with sunglasses...

You don't have to take the exam at the end, but if you finish the AP class and don't take the exam FLVS automatically changes your recorded transcript to Honors (subject) instead of AP (subject.)

My dd started two AP classes, but dropped both of them - AP Human Geography and AP Art History.

She found it to be too much work to do both AP and dual enrollment.

I though both classes were well done. I was happy with both teachers. There is a lot of work, but it is much less busy work than the regular high school classes. There was a lot of writing, especially in AP Art History. But, that AP exam includes a lot of writing. Once you are assigned a class you can look through all of the assignments for the whole year. Both classes has a mixture of content assignments and assignments that focused on writing for the AP. Both classes expected assignments to be turned in three to four times per week so it was easy to fall behind quickly. I have no idea how well prepared the students were at the end, but both teachers assigned to my dd were accessable and appeared to want the students to do well. The AP Human Geography class teacher had weekly meet-up times where students could hold discussions. I think FLVS is trying to do more of that this year as well. HTH.
