Those Who Know Greek...

Why is "β" in μολυβι pronounced "vee" and in βιβλιο pronounced "b" as in baby?

Is Î²Î¹Î²Î»Î¹Î¿ an ancient word so it retains the "b" sound, or is it because it is in the beginning as opposed to in μολυβι?

I couldn't figure out how to get the accents in with this Chrome keyboard, so sorry about that!

Actually, β is pronounced "vee" in both of those words: "moLEEvee" and "veeVLEEoh." The only way to make a "bee" sound in modern Greek is to spell it μπ. The word for father, μπαμπάς, is pronouned "baBAS."

Hope this helps!
