Hunter's Moon
Why is "β" in μολυβι pronounced "vee" and in βιβλιο pronounced "b" as in baby? Is βιβλιο an ancient word so it retains the "b" sound, or is it because it is in the beginning as opposed to in μολυβι? I couldn't figure out how to get the accents in with this Chrome keyboard, so sorry about that!
ragilbert6
Actually, β is pronounced "vee" in both of those words: "moLEEvee" and "veeVLEEoh." The only way to make a "bee" sound in modern Greek is to spell it μπ. The word for father, μπαμπάς, is pronouned "baBAS." Hope this helps!
