Asking for prayers for my son.

Those of you on the College Board are aware of the struggle my middle son is having right now with depression and anxiety.  I had naively hoped that by dropping AP Latin, finishing this quarter of college classes this week and getting some relief on his AP World History class, that things would be getting better.  In a way, they have.  My son feels relieved.  However, he also has felt more free to share things with us (or has been instructed by his therapist to do so.)  Well, things are worse than I imagined.  It is like an onion - the more we peel back, the more we find underneath.  While meeting with ds' therapist this evening, she strongly encouraged us to take ds to the ER for an evaluation.  I was uncomfortable with this because friends of mine have had terrible experiences with this, but she was pretty insistent.  Things keep coming out.  Well, we did take him to the ER and they transferred us to their Mental Health facility.  More things came out during the intake interview.  I am just ill with worry and anxiety over this.  The upside is that they recommended a partial inpatient stay - meaning he goes to their outpatient facility every day for the equivalent of a school day and then comes home.  They have a structured program that helps kids with his issues learn to manage.  Plus, he gets in to see a psychiatrist much earlier than we would be able to get him in otherwise.  My son seems hopeful that this is a good thing.  It is the most positive I have seen him in a while.  I know that more stuff is going to come out and that will be very scary.  I am emotionally exhausted.  My husband is very distraught, but very supportive.

Please pray for us - strength that we can deal with the ups and downs of his illness and pray for him - for peace and healing and that he finds hope and joy again.

This year I watched It's Kind of A Funny Story about a depressed and distressed teenager who books himself into a mental health facility.

It was a good film and I thought dealt with the issues well.

He has asked for and is getting help. That is major. Well done.

Adding prayers for your family.

Praying for all of you - and VERY glad you're open to being there for him no matter what gets exposed by peeling back the onion.  We may not always make the right decisions during our parenting - BTDT - (I will argue that most of us try to make the right decisions even if it doesn't end up being that way), but being there for him now and in the future is definitely right.  May you all feel the support you have and be able to grow closer.

Ellen,

My oldest son went to a program like that for 6 months. It turned out to be the best thing for him. He was 19 at the time. He learned how to "think" differently. He learned his trigger words and how to not just react with anxiety but to analyze his thoughts and poke through all the negative reactions that he would automatically think. Please pm me if I can help at all.

I've said it before but again, wasn't it easier being a mom when they all stayed in the backyard? I think getting the kids from 16-21 is the hardest time period.

Many prayers here, Ellen, for your son, you and your whole family.  My brother and sister both went through many challenges with depression in the teen years, you are handling everything very well.

For a little light, when they got the help they needed, things started to right themselves and have stayed good for them (we are all in our forties).
