lwilliams1922
I'm looking for some fresh ideas for audio books. I got the account for me but I simply haven't had time and the credits are building up so I want to get some for the kids. Looking for suggestions. Girls are 6 and 8. regentrude
Not exactly for your kids' age, but I found audible to be the cheapest source of Teaching Company courses. Unbeatable with credits.

regentrude
Do you find that most Teaching Company courses work well in this format? Do you miss lots of visuals, such as charts etc? Depends on the subject. We mainly have history, literature, and music lectures as audio. Obviously, art history would not work, nor would math. Those are usually available exclusively on DVD; if audio is offered that means it works quite well. The few we watched on video were incredibly boring because there were very few visuals - mainly a professor standing at a lectern and lecturing. Don't need to see this. We also don't have time and inclination sitting in front of a video; we listen to the lectures in the car.
tabinfl
I try to pick stories that have had movies made. We listen to the story by chapters (1-2 per day) and then watch the movie at the end. The kids love to pick out what's the same / different from the book to the movie. I have two 6 year-olds and a 5yo. The ones my kids have liked best: Uncle Wiggly's Adventures (no movie) Winnie the Pooh: The House at Pooh Corner Wizard of Oz Mary Poppins Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Charlotte's Web The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe Treasure Island -- they weren't thrilled with the story, but remembered a LOT when we watched the movie & really enjoyed it. Many of the classics have several versions available on audible.com with different readers. If you want to know which ones I chose for any of these, just drop me a note. We're currently listening to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. They didn't like it much at first, but around chapter 7 or 8 things got much more interesting. :)

ondreeuh
Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes! The story is spellbinding, and the narrator is really a performer. It's only like $3.49 though so don't use a credit on it, just buy it. My 12 year old and I just finished it and were sad to reach the end. It does have a little bit of death in it, so not for a super sensitive kid. Ok, maybe not for the average 6 year old ... But it's awesome. The Mysterious Benedict Society books are a steal at a credit each. They are normally like $25. The Invention of Hugh Cabret is really good. These might also be over the head of your 6 year old. We loved Liesl and Po, and it would be good for your kids' ages as long as you don't mind a story about a non-religious afterlife. I bought The Spindlers by the same author but haven't listened to it yet. My soon-to-be-6 year old doesn't enjoy audiobooks yet but he loves listening to me read Pippi Longstocking, and Audible has that.
TGHEALTHYMOM
You may be interested in SWB's books too. Ancient and Medieval are available now.
kolamum
Oh, we enjoy so much it's hard to list them all: Peter & The Starcatchers {series} Olga Da Polga {series} By The Great Horn Spoon The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate City Of Ember Ramona {series} Penderwicks Mary Poppins Nim's Island {I think they only have book 1} Mr Poppers Penguins The Water Horse The Story of Despereaux My Side of The Mountain A Little Princess Pippi Longstockings Narnia {series} The Story Of Dr Dolittle Where The Mt Meets The Moon Half Magic Thimble Summer All Of A Kind Family {series} Wizard of Oz Grimm Sisters {series} 39 Clues {series} Lionboy Trilogy Humphrey Hamster {series} Some wouldn't be appropriate for your children, but others would. Humphrey Hamster would probably be fun for your girls!
dsmith
We love Black Beauty, but my sensitive niece gets sad listening to it. The narrator is wonderful. The Hobbit gets listened to nearly every night, and I catch ds singing the songs throughout the day. We also enjoyed: The Golden Goblet Fifty Famous Stories Retold D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Anne Hathaway narrating) Our Island Story That's all I can recall at the moment.
