AAR2 or Sing, Spell, Read and Write or Explode the Code

Dd just finished Aar1. Budget is tight(so buying aar2 might be difficult), and a friend has offered Sing, Spell, Read and Write for me to borrow. I'm having trouble finding the scope and sequence of SSRW, so I don't know which, if any, level would nicely follow AAR1. I'd also considered Explode the Code, but someone told me ETC doesn't teach phonics rules. Based on those samples, dd is ready for ETC 3 or so. Help anyone?

Well, if your budget is tight, and you don't expect that to change much in upcoming years, I would go with SWR.  You buy the books now, and then you will never need to buy anything else (except for the student books, which are about $5 each).  You will continue to use the same books every year for every child.  The other thing I like about it is that I have everything I need for every child without having to worry about researching or testing to find out which level my child needs.  It is all there.

I can't say anything about what to buy but I've used SSRW with my daughter and its a complete phonics program. I have the kinder/level 1 combo and to my understanding level 1 would be for first grade level. We've completed the program though I haven't assessed her I believe she's above first grade in reading ability and comprehension. The program teaches all the phonogram rules I believe beginning with letter sounds and all the vowel sounds, then continuing with blends and into clusters which is what they called them but they are the diphtongs and such. As far as the scope you'd just have to look at the books.

Hope that helps.
