AnnaG
We just read The Hound of the Baskervilles aloud, which my dd10 and ds12 loved. Now I'd like to order some Sherlock Holmes books for the kids to read independently, but I'm not sure which ones would be best for this age group. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. MorningGlory
Try an all-in-one volume. I think there are 56 short stories and several "novels" (4?). I love, love, love the short stories, but be forewarned there is serious opium and cocaine use in some of them. And make sure the font is readable. I have an old hardback "complete volume" with illustrations that my grandfather gave me when I was a young teenager. I still read it through once every few years. Just like LOTR...Holmes cannot be read too many times! :)
Chrysalis Academy
I agree! The Hound of the Baskervilles was a huge hit, and we read The Sign of Four aloud, too. Get a copy of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" or any of the other collections of the shorter works, and have them go to town! The Red-Headed Leg, The Speckled Band were special favorites. Lori D.
Here's a recent thread with some great responses on which Sherlock Holmes stories were favorites and why. There is also a post that lists the 4 novels, and the 5 short story collections. And here is a link to the complete Sherlock Holmes (all 4 novels and all the short stories) for reading online: The Complete Sherlock Holmes. Also, your family might really enjoy the 1980s-1990s BBC productions of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett (check your local library, or on Netflix, or at Amazon). Happy sleuthing! Warmest regards, Lori D.
watertribe
You can get all the stories free for your kindle on http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=conan+doyle you can pre-read them first. My ds13 has read them all and has loved them all- wish there were more!
Professormom
You may want to try The Lord Peter Whimsey stories by Dorothy Sayers as well. For some reason, my kids are addicted to these right now. They are very Sherlock-esque:-)
Karen in CO
My dd12 read a Sherlock Holmes collection first then found a few more stories in other collections. She used the dictionary on her Kindle frequently when she started the book because she wasn't familiar with some of the vocabulary. Sherlock is a nice change from the dystopian books she read last summer.
