socody
If you have used OPGTR all the way through, at what point would you start adding in spelling. And if you wanted to add in AAS, after which lesson would you start? It seems like they overlap in a lot of areas, so I think it would work well together, just wondering when is a good idea to start? Missouri Okie
We started AAS about half way through OGPTR. My daughter is now 3 lessons away from finishing OGPTR and two "Steps" away from finishing AAS level 1. I think they complement one another well, even though spelling and reading are separate skills. I see AAS as a slower reinforcement of many of the phonetic rules introduced in OGPTR. For my kids, the rules didn't entirely sink in while going through OGPTR. AAS has helped them solidify the information in their minds. The overlap is good!
StartingOver
I agree, about half way through OPGTR at least. That way they are reading reasonably well before moving to spelling.
Dahliarw
I agree with the pps. I do find they compliment each other really well. And the phonics my ds learned for spelling rules he ported over to decoding for reading.
Kathleen in LV
We started AAS 1 about 2/3 of the way through OPGTR. We skipped all the AAS lessons on letter sounds and started with the CVC words. The first lessons went rather quickly, but I liked easing into the spelling program and getting my son used to the tiles, as well as to the dictation.
