Art of Poetry (Classic Press) & Grammar of Poetry (IEW)

Recommended Posts

I used about half of Art of Poetry this year with a 7th and 8th grader. Heartily recommend it. My two kids who took the course feel like they have an active connection to poetry now, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time spent in that book. We'll do the second half either over the summer or through the next school year.

FWIW I only purchased the teacher edition. We read aloud from it, shared the text, and made it conversation based.

Thanks! The sample does look nice.

I used MCT Music of the Hemispheres this past year, and it was not a hit (with me). My oldest as no opinion on it and my middle ds loves it. I, however, don't enjoy the layout and such of the book. So I don't want to continue with his poem series.

Can you link the "Art of Poetry" book?

The Grammar of Poetry has been revised. I bought the old version on clearance a month or so ago. Here is Andrew Pudewa talking about the older version.

And this has a "look inside" for the newer version. (I didn't look, because I own the old one and am not going to be tempted by pretties!) http://www.canonpress.org/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=604&idcategory=0

Does anyone know if there are any content differences between the newer and older versions of Grammar of Poetry? I am considering buying the DVD and I have the older workbooks. I really don't want to buy new books if I don't have to. Thanks, Joy

Hey all,

several of you were asking about Grammar of Poetry. It was redesigned last year with a brand new, high-production video course to accompany it.

Here is a "preview" video of the course:

Also, there is an opportunity to get it at a huge discount through the Homeschool Buyers Co-op (group buy ending soon!) : https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/grammar-of-poetry/?c=1

The video course IS compatible with the old Grammar of Poetry text. The redesign was mostly aesthetic.

Find out more about the Grammar of Poetry here: http://www.romanroadsmedia.com/store/grammar_of_poetry.php

Here is a homeschool mom talking about the course:

This is a great video course to take WITH your kids - most college graduates haven't learned these things!

This thread has been very helpful. I just placed a conditional order for the 50% deal at Homeschool Buyer's Co-op. It doesn't look like that will happen, but I don't really "need" it this year so I didn't put in for a higher price.

Has this been offered before? I'm hoping I might have another chance if my order doesn't go through this year.

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but I'm looking at maybe doing a semester of poetry study with a small group in the area (like a co-op, but just me & this class) and wanted some input from those of you who have used either of these.

I like the looks of Grammar of Poetry esp. w/new DVD. I admit I couldn't get through the video sample of Art of Poetry. (I think I disliked the woman speaking?)

Could those of you who have used either tell what you liked or didn't like about them? How long did it take to go through them? How long did they take you to go through (example:  30 minutes per day, three days per week, full year) did you work on them? Age range used with?

I'm still in the investigation stage & poetry isn't really my strong suit. We did CAP's Art of Argument with 7th & 8th graders during the first semester. If we do Grammar of Poetry, we have to decide if we will include the 6th graders on up. If we do Art of Poetry, we'd probably stick with just the older group. So, those are considerations.

Thanks!

I've looked at Art of Poetry online and will probably use it next year. This year we did Grammar of Poetry with a small group of close-aged kids. GOP does a really good job of explaining scansion (counting the meter/rhythm/rhyme of poetry) and goes over about 5 figures of speech. HOWEVER, it does not really address *meaning*...but I think Art of Poetry will do that very well. I like doing them both...and I think GOP is better done first.

BTW, I stop the video and we talk meaning with GOP *before* we do the scansion part.

Laurel, that was a super-helpful post! Shannon learned to do scansion in theater and she has done it all over her Midsummer script! she finds it really fun.   Sounds like she'd love GoP.  When i look at the two of them, it definitely looks like AoP is - more - and I was thinking of it for high school.

Rose - I think you nailed part of the reason why I'm leaning toward GoP & one of my friends is leaning toward AoP. She has a high schooler next year and I don't (yet). I want some fun along with the learning (like we had with AoA, actually). I'm not ready for 'more' yet. Hmmm.

Another thing to note is that GOP mostly goes with excerpts of poems. He recommends you scan only the first 4-6 lines, at most. He does use some well-known and classic poems, but starts off with nursery rhymes to make things more approachable. AOP seems to use whole poems and more challenging than typical "childhood poetry."

Bumping up this old thread.

I've been debating between these two programs for my 8th graders.  Is the general recommendation to do GOP first and then AOP?  Also, does GOP stand well on its own without the DVD (too may $$$), and could I use the TE alone.

Thanks.

I've never seen that recommendation. I think most just chose one and roll with it.

You'd have better results making your own thread about GoP.

GoP seems more nuts and bolts. AoP is more understanding or analyzing. Take your pick. We're happy AoP users and see no need to add GoP.

I was responding specifically to some of the comments made in this thread.

I'm all ears about this too - I've been looking at both of these programs.  Art of Poetry looks pretty advanced to me, but it sounds like people have used it successfully with 7th and 8th graders?  I had been thinking of it more as a high school program.

My girls will be 8th grade, but I want to keep this fun.  We love poetry time, and it's time to step it up a notch but not too much.  I was all set to order Art of Poetry until I read the above comments and turned my attention towards Grammar of Poetry.  I would still use AoP the following year.  I've looked at the samples, and it does seem AoP does more analyzing.  I'm sure either one would work but want it fun and enjoyable.

I have Art of Poetry now, and I am not going to use it for awhile yet.  Not that we couldn't cope with it in 7th, but I still think it's more appropriate for older kids who are ready to be more analytical with their poetry studies.  I think it looks great and look forward to using it in 9th grade, most likely.  We're going with very gentle poetry studies this year, so we can all write together - we're going to work through Rose, Where Did You Get That Read, and we're also going to memorize Shakespeare from How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare.  We're pretty excited about it.
