Rushdie--where to start?

Haroun and the Sea of Stories is a nice, easy place to start. It can be read by or to kids as well. Even though it's a kid-friendly one, it will also give you a feel for Rushdie's language.

The Ground Beneath Her Feet is another possibility. In my opinion, its the Rushdie novel that goes down the easiest.

Or, of course, you could just start with the best and read Midnight's Children.

Whatever you do, DO NOT start with The Satanic Verses. I think it's probably still his most famous thanks to the death threats it spawned, but it's not his best or most accessible novel by far.
