Jean in Newcastle
The lid on one of my file boxes broke off. It's plastic. There really isn't a way to fix it. I happened to have another one that wasn't being used so it was easy to swap that out but now what do I do with the old one? It doesn't fit in the garbage can. It doesn't seem fair to try and pawn it off on someone at Goodwill. But it also seems a bit of a shame to save up for the dump. So what do you do with things like this? Mommyfaithe
Break it up so it fits into the trash.
Catwoman
Could you use it as a recycling container or something?
RoughCollie
If I can't find a way to use it, it isn't good enough to give to Goodwill, and it can't be recycled, I call the trash company and pay them to come and pick it up. It's the trash company's version of excess baggage. We don't have a dump/landfill/transfer station to take stuff to.
Parrothead
If it is plastic, can't you recycle it?
Laura Corin
If it is plastic, can't you recycle it? It depends on the plastic: each area decides which kinds of plastic it is able to recycle. Here, I can recycle plastics labelled '1' or '2' on the bottom. Laura
Parrothead
I guess you can tell I don't live in an area with recycling facilities. Thanks for the info.
Melissa in Australia
we don't have rubbish collection,, so we put it into the rubbish trailer until we have a load and take it to the tip
kiwik
If you can't repurpose it get the kids to smash it up so it fits. It probably isn't recyclable but check the code.

Night Elf
Do still call your trash company though and ask if they take items that sit outside the can. We threw out a sofa by breaking it into pieces and we weren't charged extra for those bits. It took us weeks to get rid of the whole thing. :) It was beyond repairable and I was so bummed about losing that couch.
