Hello,

I am Chinese from Hong Kong. I am thinking either homeschool my kids (7.5 and 2.5 years old) or send them to private school. My main worry is that they will not have any long term friends. I live in the woods and there is not a lot of kids around. Also, as a Chinese, English is not my main language and I am worry that I cannot teach her all the word properly. I also doubt my ability to teach her everything. My husband is American and very smart. We both work at home. We can afford to send them to private school, however, we do want to spend more time with our kids and to teach them without any kinds of school authority. Can any homeschool parents or anyone had gone through the same doubt give me some suggestions? Thank you.

Hi Kashuen,

Welcome! I hope you will find the information you need. Also, here is the link to the Chinese homeschoolers group that happycc started, we have some international homeschoolers there:

http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/forum/235-chinese-homeschoolers/

Have you moved here recently? My first suggestion would be to look at the homeschooling organizations within your state, for a couple of reasons

1) Some states have more requirements for homeschoolers, e.g. portfolio, annual testing and you should be aware of those.

2) You may find more groups, resources closer to you than you realize.

I also suggest reading Susan Wise Bauer's (SWB on this board) book, "The Well Trained Mind". It is usually available at libraries, and there are eReader options too. It will give you a framework to get started, and help you focus on the basics (3Rs - Reading, Writing, Arithmetic) and how to add in other subjects like history, geography, science.

Then, as you plan, take a look at the K-8 board on this forum. It has plenty of discussion on different programs - especially, search for phonics programs. Feel free to post questions and ask for suggestions (keeping in mind that you know your children best, so the decision is ultimately yours) on your plans. Also, your children are young and you may find the schedules you more relaxed than what they are used to (for the 7.5 year old who went to school in HK), or what you grew up with. This is not necessarily a problem - it will take some trial and error to find "what works", and even that changes as your children grow.

Blessings as you think through these decisions! I hope you will find all the support you need.

PS: I too grew up in Asia. I did not learn phonics, and my pronunciation was different from the locals'. I'm using a program (SWR) which has taught me along with my son, and he is reading and conversing well. There are other excellent programs - just an encouragement, phonics/reading is one aspect with a multitude of options, it should not be a source of intimidation.

i would love to be part of the group as well. We are starting homeschooling next monday. DS is 3.75 and DD is 15 months. We are only doing basic writing/math and craft type of work.

I am in concord, HappyCC. Please let me know if you found any homeschool group around east bay as well. I am planning to join the tri-valley homeschool group.

Here is that link...for the group .. It is a forum. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/forum/235-chinese-homeschoolers/

Are you looking for more of a get together kind of group locally in the bay area?

There are tons in the SF Bay Area but not one I know specifically for Chinese Homeschoolers but that is a great idea. Hmmm. Maybe start one on Meetup.com?

hi, i have a daughter turning 2 that i am starting to get ready to teach her following WTM method. however, i understand with children that small i just get started now by following Susan Bauer's advice to talk to her a lot, read to her a lot and eventually get into alphabets, phonetics etc. but that's for english, what about for chinese? can anyone who taught their young children both languages share some experience? after reading WTM i have a pretty clear picture of the english but what should I do with the chinese? of course we are also speaking to her in chinese and reading to her in chinese, she is currently immersed in both languages but i don't know how to get technical on the chinese part….any advice would be great, thanks!

Hi jowa78, and welcome!

There is a similar question on this older thread, I hope it can be of some help:

http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/262283-any-chineseenglish-dual-lingual-homeschooling-families-here/

How easy is it for you to access Chinese materials? Depending on that, we could discuss materials for the different subjects.

Hello Everyone:

I live in San Leandro, I have found a wonderful Chinese tutor who works with my kids 2pm on Fridays.

I would love to open this option to other families to come join us or contact this tutor to see if she can come to your house.

She takes BART everywhere and charges our family $30. If you are interested, private message me.

Right now we are talking in working on creating a Chinese curriculum similar to Excelerate  Spanish

http://exceleratespanish.com/

I have been trying to reach the author but not having much luck. So looks like we will develop it on our own.

Hi,

I'd also like to join the group.

I'm also a Chinese from Hong Kong, now residing in Texas. I have the same concern with teaching phonics, as I've never learned it before. At this stage, I'm still deciding whether I should quit my job to homeschool. My 4-year-old daughter seems to learn quite well at a private preschool. So we will either homeschool or send her to private school. I want to figure out the plan before I decide to commit to homeschool her.

Welcome! You certainly can teach phonics without learning to read the same way. There are amazing resources out there. Both my boys learned to read with Explode the Code, which I highly recommend. It is very age appropriate. I started them on Book 1 when they turned 3 and finished the series before they turned 6. Please know that you do not have to let her do all the writing in the last part of each lesson. You can use letter tiles for her to spell the words or she can spell orally. Susan Wise Bauer believes that reading can be much ahead of a child's ability of holding a pencil to write. So don't let writing letters hamper her reading ability.

No level of bonding with your own children can be achieved better than homeschooling. There are very good schools out there, but many people still choose to homeschool even though there are quality private schools they can afford. Just some thoughts for you. Ultimately, you are the one to decide which kind of education and what school or not you want your kids to go to.

Best regards,

Jade

 Phonics....

I vaguely remember being taught phonics and I was born and raised in the US.

I have learned more teaching my kids phonics than when I was in school here.

In fact I went back to school after teaching my first set of kids phonics and my reading fluency and comprehension improved greatly that I really did well in college than when I went at 18yrs.

There are many phonics programs that have a cd that plays the sounds of the phonograms.
