PuddleJumper1
Ds is looking to get a used car before leaving for college. Our insurance company seems to be coming in with high quote. So on to The Hive I go  If you've got an older teen son with his own car/insurance did you find any one company that was cheaper than others. I'm beginning to think it might not be so important for him to have a car on campus!
Jenny in Florida
Mine is young, yet. However, I called Geico the other day to ask how much it will cost to add my son once he gets his license. It's a guesstimate, since we're a tear out yet, but they say it will be about $2,000 per year to add him. That does not include an additional vehicle and does assume a good student discount. We just added our 19 year old back on our Geico policy. He purchased his own car (a 1992 Saturn) and it added $100 a month. It would have been more if he was a primary driver on our cars since they're newer. Previously, as of last month, he was living in Oregon for a year and had his own policy through Prudential with the 'snap shot' discount. That was the best price he found for a solo policy for a young driver.
PuddleJumper1
Very interesting on both of these! Mine is young, yet. However, I called Geico the other day to ask how much it will cost to add my son once he gets his license. We are with Geico and in FL as well. Adding ds to our policy, driving our cars, only increased our premium by $60.00 a month. Geico quoted dh a policy change on 4 different very used cars of over $100 a month. I'll have a look at Prudential. milovany
We did this a year ago, and with Progressive, it was only $50 more a month for our then 18yo son. Approx. same rate here a year later.

Approx. same rate here a year later. Was that with adding another car titled to your 18yo? With our current 2 cars he's only about $60 more a month. We're now looking at him buying his own car and adding it to our policy. Either way I'm going to check out Progressive.
Susan C.
GEICO told us the same the first time around..... but if you think about it, 3 drivers and 2 cars can NOT be charged 3 full time drivers (one will be without a car).... I asked for two of us to be part time drivers since we shared a car, they had to ask a person above them, and it was approved. Our premium didn't go up very much. Now we have three cars, four drivers. The kids share one car, so part time drivers. The premium didn't go up at all when we added the 4th driver. Now if we get a 4th car..... $800 every six months added. ADDING: Its much cheaper to have the cars in YOUR name. If the car is in your ds name, he will need his own policy. That may be the quotes you were getting.
Tammi K
Just double checked some facts with my son. I had some details wrong. Rates vary so drastically from state to state. When ds(18) moved to Oregon last April, we took him of our policy. Then he bought a car of his own in November. He looked into a variety of insurance providers. Adding him back to our policy while we were in Alaska and he was in Oregon was very expensive. But, he found he could get his own policy through Progressive for $190/month and by agreeing to the 'snapshot' he was able to lower the cost to $130/month. He decided to come back to Alaska last month. He bought a car and checked insurance prices. Here in Alaska, a policy in his name through Progressive would be $250/month but adding him back on our Geico policy was only an additional $100/month. I guess the only thing you can do is make a LOT of phone calls and check prices. Good luck!
PentecostalMom
It's high. I don't envy you. I was so happy to take my ds off of my policy. My insurance guy (same one for over a decade) said girls have more fender benders, but boys cause more fatalities. That is why males are higher than females. Not good.
