If you use Analytical Grammar...lots of questions about planning?

I thought I had all my choices made for next year, but I'm considering Analytical Grammar as an option for my kids. I'm leaning toward not doing grammar every year and wanting to take the time to concentrate on writing skills. I get how to do that for my DD who will be in 6th grade next year. I could do the AG for her as they recommend for 3 years. They say it takes about 10 weeks to do the first season, what do you do the rest of the year? Concentrate on writing? I like the idea of it and I can see her really thriving with it since she wouldn't be bogged down with studying grammar for 1/2 an hour every day plus writing for 1/2 hour. It would streamline LA a lot more, I believe. Has this been your experience?

But what about my DS who will be in 3rd. He did FLL 1 but has only been doing Phonics and Mechanics review this year (2nd).

So my question is, if you use or plan to use Analytical Grammar for 6th-8th (or there about), what is your LA progression leading up to it?

Do you do a program like Primary Language Lessons/Intermediate Language Lessons by Emma Serl that concentrates more on usage and writing with some grammar mixed in?

Or a program like Essentials in Writing that has grammar teaching then concentrate on writing built into the program?

Or do you do grammar every year leading up to it? Like R&S?

Or do you do one year of grammar (3rd grade) and then concentrate on writing the other years (4th-5th), then hit grammar again for 6th? What would you recommend be used in this situation?

Please share you experiences and/or opinions! Thanks for your guidance...
