Parrothead
Back story: Mom has been baking bread and experimenting with sourdough. She made her own starter, fed it, baked with it and used it all up saying she worried about the heat at her house making it go bad. Then you get an email saying she is ordering from King Arthur and is there anything you need. So you tell her that, no there isn't anything you need, but list a few wants. A couple days later she emails you the order confirmation and you see a couple of the "wants". So you figure they will send you a small box with two items. Today when you wake up at noon after suffering insomnia all night and going to bed at 5a, you find this huge box on your kitchen counter which your dd brought inside after getting up earlier and letting the cat out. Whoa, This box is much bigger than you expected. Well, carp. You have to go to the post office and mail mom her stuff because the company sent it all to you. You call your mom to thank her and have to leave a message because she isn't home. After getting functional you go through the box and find sourdough starter and a crock. Well remember that your mom has already told you that she didn't want the sourdough started in her house due to the heat. And you also remember that your mom has a cell phone so you try to call that too. No answer. So do you begin to think all the stuff in the box is for you? I'm thinking so and that I need to get that sourdough starter doctored up and into that crock. What do I do? Leave the stuff I didn't ask for or assume that it is mine and get that starter out of the plastic container and on its way to being a good starter? Keep in mind my parents could be anywhere. They have an RV and it is warm where they are.
Tita Gidge
I'm that daughter/sister/friend/cousin/every-person who always thinks everything is for her, so that gets my vote. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong LOL. Either way, I end up with good stuff :D

Parrothead
Are they coming for a visit? Not anytime soon. Maybe late summer when it is warm here.

LostSurprise
How sweet! I would just keep it around and dream about it until I got a call through. Then you'll be excited about it if it is yours. :)

Unicorn.
Did the box come from KA, or from her? Personally, I would only use the thing I "knew" might be mine, until I talked to her. Unless the box came from her, then I would assume it's all mine! If she's in an RV somewhere, could she have had her stuff sent to you to hold (seems weird, but maybe)? JFSinIL
I'd start the starter - you can always divvy it up if she wants it back. It is the stuff that keeps on giving as long as you feed it, right?

Parrothead
I heard from them late last night. Mom said, "happy Mother's Day." So it is mine. I did go ahead and feed the starter.

KungFuPanda
Why doesn't your mom keep her fed sourdough starter in the fridge? That's where it should live except when you're feeding it or using it. The temperature concern makes no sense to me.

Her response to all the "would you eat this" threads would be a resounding "no".
