That's the conclusion I've come to, now nearing the end of my second year of teaching logic stage students.

I could state it with better ed-speak and a nod to personal responsibility and other character ideals, but essentially, my dc need to learn to

Yes! Reading directions is a good one. Also, remembering all those little things I thought I taught ds - writing in complete sentences, remembering that spelling counts, capital letters, the simple things. It doesn't help that some days ds can't seem to remember his name. All I can think is that his brain is melting to reform itself.

Brain melting to reform itself. I need to remember that when he stares at me blankly when I remind him to use a period and he responds with, "What's a period?"
