I'd like to hear suggestions too as I want to do some Shakespeare the summer with the kids. I am by no means knowledgeable about Shakespeare and haven't seen a wide variety but here are some movies I have seen and enjoyed:

The Taming of the Shrew (1967) with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Hamlet (1990) Mel Gibson - but I haven't seen the 2009 one with David Tennant

Othello (1952) Orson Welles

Once you are familiar with some of the stories watch the Reduced Shakespeare Company! It is hilarious!

My 10yo has been listening to the Eunice Lamb kid versions of Shakespeare for a few years now. He found RSC at the library. I was laughing so much I was crying! We liked it so much he's gotten it again, and we hardly every do repeats!.

I taught a Shakespeare study last year for my older dd and 5 of her friends. We studied one play a month using this method...

Read the Lamb's children's version of the play we were going to study

Watch a movie production of the play and have some discussion about the movie and what was coming up in the play. We also tried to have an activity that got the kids up and speaking/acting the Shakespeare.

Read the play, as well as selections from Shakespeare for Dummies and the DK Essential Shakespeare Handbook and Brightest Heaven of Invention

They then had to do a project from the syllabus I made

We studied (in order):

Much Ado About Nothing

Macbeth

The Taming of the Shrew

Henry V

Hamlet

The Tempest

Romeo and Juliet

A Midsummer Night's Dream

We watched the Kenneth Brannagh/Emma Thompson version of Much Ado - all the kids liked this version though there is nudity in the beginning to be edited

We watched the Patrick Stewart Macbeth - reviews were mixed from the kids because it was very creepy and bloody, no nudity but a suggestive scene with Lady Macbeth and her robe. We also were able to see our local Shakespeare Company perform Macbeth and all of us loved it.

We watched the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton Taming of the Shrew - reviews were mixed because it was an older movie, personally I thought it was well done for the time period.

We watched the Kenneth Brannagh Henry V - everyone liked this movie, I can't remember if there was anything that needed previewing

We watched the David Tennant Hamlet - AWESOME! We all wanted to watch it again. Preview if you have boys and are conservative, there may be one or two parts you'd like to edit.

We watched the Helen Mirren Tempest - a bit of a departure with a woman Prospero - I don't know if anyone really liked this. The only other option I could find was an old play version and it was worse. Definitely preview, Ariel is always naked, though with a diffused glow and he has a bit of gender confusion.

We watched the Leonardo Decaprio/Claire Danes Romeo + Juliet - all the kids liked this one...a lot. I thought it was a bit noisy and loud, but thought Leo and Claire did a good job with the Shakespeare. Again, we edited a couple parts.

I think we settled on the Helen Mirren A Midsummer Night's Dream - it was ok. Many of the Midsummer's had nudity in different places that were just too difficult to edit for the boys in my class. It was ok, though, because our local Shakespeare company had a performance of their traveling Midsummer and it was the best play we have ever seen! Nothing we could have watched would have compared anyway.

We also saw as many productions as we were able at our local Shakespeare company and other various places.

It was a great study. Some of the kids fell in love with Shakespeare, some, though not in love, had a greater appreciation for him. We began keeping a blog for their projects and favorite quotes, however, it was senior year and we all got so busy that we didn't keep it up. If you are interested in some of what we did, you can still check it out here http://theweirdsistersandpuck.blogspot.com/ If anyone has any questions, let me know!
