Night Elf
In January of last year, I got prescription reading glasses. My eyes weren't horrible but reading stuff that was a little blurry was a small nuisance. The problem is that I got dependent on them. Now when I try to read without them, even for a minute, the words are so blurry that it takes me longer to figure out what they are. I'm 45 yrs. old and I know that this is a time when eyes start not being as clear and crisp. What i'm curious about is this. Have I hastened the problem with my eyes because I became dependent on them? I wear them every time I look at words whether in a book or on the computer screen. Will it be a problem later, meaning would I need to continue getting a stronger prescription as I get older? Or are my eyes getting worse simply because of my age and the same fact that made me need them in the first place, slightly blurry reading? Does that make sense? It's early and I'm only on my first cup of coffee, and my DH is sleeping and I forgot my glasses in the bedroom. :)
bethben
No- according to my doctor, you can't grow dependent on reading glasses. My doctor told me to just give in and buy some when I was having similar issues. You're just getting older. Older squinty eyed women unite! GailV
There is a school of thought that you can become dependent on them. Somewhere around here I have a book on the subject. It has tiny print, because the author thought that helps build up your eyes. I haven't read the entire book, partially because of the print issue. ANYWAY, IIRC, the author made the analogy that it's like wearing a cast or brace on your leg, in which case the muscles begin to atrophy. (I might have that last bit mixed up -- it sounds exactly like that book on barefoot running and why you shouldn't wear arch supports. Or maybe I just keep finding books with the same theme.) Edited to add: Okay, I found it online http://www.amazon.co...y/dp/1556433417
Pawz4me
I don't think you become dependent on them so much as your brain begins to recognize what it sees through the glasses as normal. I suspect if you went w/o them for a week or so your brain would once again begin to recognize what you see with your own eyes as normal. It's pretty much the same process (in reverse) when someone gets new glasses and there's an adjustment period. I suspect you will need stronger glasses as you age. Almost everyone does. But I believe it's due to continuing deterioration of normal eyesight. In other words, if you hadn't gotten glasses when you did and tried to get by for several more years, you'd probably need a stronger prescription then than you did in January of last year. Ottakee
Listening in here...........I am only 42 and have been noticing that I hold the book farther away or get slight headaches. I even broke down and upped the font size one size on my kindle (that is handy). I had Lasik surgery and that is great but they did warn me I would still need reading glasses. The time is likely coming.
