All About Reading Level 1 - How necessary are the readers?

How necessary are the readers in All About Reading Level 1? I found a great deal on the Teacher's Guide and Student Pack (from someone that bought them but never used them), but she doesn't have the readers.

 

Can I substitute readers from the library (Bob books maybe?) or use Abeka Readers I already have or would it be really helpful to have the ones that go with AAR? Is it difficult to sub with other books, since you would need to find stories that match up with which letters have been learned?

 

I've spent most of my curriculum budget already but couldn't pass up the deal.

Yup, extremely important. Many of the lessons are straight from the readers.

Here's another recent thread that discusses it also. I would only use it with the readers for sheer ease of use, but if you are willing to do the work to match them up it is doable.

I think it would be possible to get enough practice with the fluency pages which you do have. That being said I love the readers so much I just bit the bullet and bought the other two.
