February Financial Accountability Week 2 (2/8-2/14)

It did fly by! And, I'm loving this accountability! So, while my goal wasn't to have a certain number of no-spend days, I am happy to report I didn't spend any money yesterday!

But, today will be a different story. My husband is off to Urgent Care with ds12 due to what looks like a staph infection on his knee. Yuck. That'll probably be about $40 (urgent care copay and then the antibiotic). So, I'll update my totals later.

I have no spare $$ this month, as we are getting DH's car repaired.

2/1 -- $21 gas, $3 parking at show, groceries $114

2/2 -- $14 pizza after chess tournament

2/3 -- $0

2/4 -- $0

2/5 -- $80 orthodontist appt

2/6 -- $36 groceries, $9 clay for history project, $8 Awanas book, $15 Awanas cars (taken out of grocery budget)

2/7 -- $5 glasses adjustment/new nose pads, $25 pizza

In my defense, it was snowing, DH came home early and worked on me for a long time before I caved to the pizza. I'm posting a day behind, so that's why I'm including week 1.

I need to go to the "big" city today which is a 45 min drive each way. I can't go till after my DD gets out of school at 2pm so I'm planning on taking something for us to eat for dinner while we're out. Then I have to go to Target, Costco, Winco, Joann's and the mall. I have a list and a budget I need to stick to.

Yep, like "Financial Accountability" as the title. :)

Here's how the first week ended:

2/1: $253 - groceries/household

2/2: $28 - dinner out

2/3: $7 - Kindle book

2/4: $132 - groceries

2/5: $0

2/6: $0

2/7: $14 - pizza; $6 - Kindle book for DS

Totals: $385 groceries/household; $42 dining out/takeout; $13 Kindle... and 2 no-spend days!! :)

Today I'm staying home, but may have DH stop by the store for milk and a handful of other things.

While returning home from dropping off DH's car, I hit a pothole, bent the rim and popped off the tire on my car. So, right now, we are carless. And it's gonna cost $200 for a used rim which they can put on on Monday. So, really bad weekend for car repairs. Oh, and we ate at the fast food place across the street from the car dealership (I hit the pothole right in front of there).

First week totals:

Grocery: $209.77

School: $219.96

Clothing: $77.61

Pets: $4.09

Other: $11.79

I went over budget for groceries last week, but that is because we spent nearly $20 on Rescue Remedy (OTC meds goes in grocery) in hopes it will help with DD3's meltdowns. She deserves some sort of meltdown medal. Anyway, we had rollover from January, so we had plenty of money in the grocery budget for it.

School spending was high because I spent $109 on a new 150 set of Prismacolors; it was an awesome deal, and I've been wanting a new set for a few months now. The rest of school spending was the fee for this semester's Korean classes for DS11. Fortunately, both expenses will last for a while.

Clothing was needed items for DS11.

Pets was crickets for the frog. I'm sure he appreciates being fed.

Other was for a non-school book I purchased. I don't have a category for that.

Groceries: $269

Gas: $32

Personal: $66

Curriculum: $68

Pets: $32

And I transferred $25 to savings.

My totals for last week weren't so bad, except for eating out. Gets me every time. :(

Grocery - around $90

Eating out - $108

School items - $27

Gymnastics for the month - $87

No spend days - 3

And for yesterday

2/8 - pizza $32

I have a feeling the eating out might be worse this week. It's a very busy week out of the house.

Okay - had some spending. $600 for rowing payment. Dh had a funeral and brought home some extra money! Our big spending was on medical, putting us over budget. One just can't budget a medical emergency! Our 12 yo has probable MRSA.

Goals:

Groceries (including all household items): $200/$700

Medical: $150/$100 (This is the month we need a buy our kids' medications!)

Gas: $97/$550 (This is a KILLER!!)

Kids' activities: $880/$1700 (Again, this month is a KILLER - payments for rowing, gymnastics, orchestra, and karate are all due. But, it's all budgeted.)

Things I'm going to try to curb this month and I hope to bank the difference in our vacation account:

Eating out: 0!!!

Coffee: 0!!!

Added stuff we bought that wasn't budgeted: $150 for trip insurance for a trip in August, $23 for parking for our August trip (it was cheaper to buy it now!)

Extra income (hopefully!):

Goal: $335/$400

(Dh occasionally gets "tips" for his services as a priest - wedding, funerals, etc. He has a funeral next week. I also hope to sell some things on line. And, that will be banked in our vacation account!!)

When I first read your post, I went :confused1: and thought maybe I needed to attend some funerals.

(Dh occasionally gets "tips" for his services as a priest - wedding, funerals, etc.

Then I said, "Oh, ok."

He has a funeral next week.

Then I went  because it almost sounded like you look forward to someone dying, but I understand...really I do.

I didn't spend any money because I'm tired. (sleeping) I still haven't done the Costco run I need to do, but I picked up paint yesterday and painted today. That was something like $45.00. Everyone in this house has been sick, but me. I'm tired though.

5 no-spend days last week. I'm not counting gas or regular bills because we can't do anything to change those right now. This week should be 5 no-spend days also, without anything too major on the other days. We might do a bit of grocery shopping with leftover giftcards in the middle of the week, and I also might have to do some shopping for clothes since I tore one of my two pairs of jeans. We are doing taxes sometime this week, so I'll have to spend a little bit on that. We might do a zoo trip before half-price days are over at the end of the month, since it's a better deal for us than the annual membership. We also have to pay for some roof repairs at the house we're trying to sell, but first we need one of these stinking companies to actually call us back and look at the roof.

2/8 $0, 2/9 $0

We spent over $1000 today. No, that's right, $1000.

Let's see... the dog had to go to the vet. We bought groceries and went to Costco. We had dinner after DS's basketball game.

But the big thing... our washer died. It had been on its last legs for a while. So, the good news is, we have a new washer. The bad news is, I need a drink after looking at today's receipts... ;)

I have been at my parents house this weekend, I have no idea what DH has spent, but I know he had to get gas to travel for work, which will be reimbursed at a slightly higher rate than the actual cost of the trip.

My week finished out

8/7 30 gas, 10 for a quick lunch, and 15 spent on cleaning supplies and heavy duty contractor trash bags

8/8 15 Towards dinner I made for my parents

8/9 25 books....but I got two brand new hardcover Usborne books, a book about the history of Valentine's Day, a reading/writing workbook I really like the looks of, two novels for DS, and a gorgeous hardcover book called Walk to Cold Mountain since we are doing a civil war mini Unit this month. All in perfect condition and it would have been over 100 new.

Oh my. This thread is a good idea but I have a feeling it might be painful to track my spending. ;)

Hmmm, I need to do this in U.S. dollars. Ok, I missed Feb 8 and 9 but I will see what I can remember.

Feb 8- McDonald's- $15

Feb 9- produce at the farmers market $15, cheesecake for baby shower I attended $20, family trip to Starbucks $20, pizza for dinner $35

Feb 10- offering at church (my beliefs prevent me from stating this), lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant $15

We eat at home Mon- Thur, then eat out or order in Fri and Sat, and usually have dinner at a friend's house on Sunday. Eating out is actually cheaper than cooking at home here!

This will make me more aware of my spending. That's a good thing, right? :)

I finally went to Costco. Target, too. I feel like I spent a thousand dollars today, but I didn't actually. Here are my totals for this month to date:

Food Groceries: $375.11

Non-Food Groceries: $97.75

Eating Out, incl. dd's lunch at school: $20.18

Clothing: $68 ish

Hair/Personal: $42.00

Entertainment (skiing): $143.56

I'm not terribly pleased with that non-food category right now, because my goal was less than $100 for that this month. I spent a lot of $$$ at Costco today, but I can assume that will last and only one purchase was not necessary. (I bought a flat of V8 Fusions to pack in dd's lunch.)

Took DD3 shopping as I had promised last week. We've been having a problem hunting down pants for her to wear because she only has two pairs that fit and aren't stained to oblivion. We funded the clothing budget for the whole month early to have the money (while other categories we shouldn't need as soon having to wait an extra week or two). We got her 2 pairs of sparkly jeans, a pair of denim capris, a pair of leggings, three shirts, a pair of fleece pants and a matching thermal shirt, a tutu skirt and matching t-shirt, a pair of pjs, a package of underwear, a package of socks, and a pair of pink Converse for $106. I went over budget by $6, but my dad contributed $20, which leaves me with money left in the budget.

I need to write a check tomorrow for $1100 for DH and DS's trip this summer......but I have it. I started an ING account for it and it is all right there.

Love saving with ING for big things. If it goes straight in there I don't know it exists and don't spend it!

Updates below. Dh got more "extra" money for another funeral he's doing today. We had to spend some more non-budgeted money on parking and entrance to my dd's gymnastics meet. And, I sold something else on line - more vacation money!!!! I still have to grocery shop today, but I think I can do that for less than $50!!! I want to be able to fit in a trip to the meat store within my monthly budget (I don't usually do that - usually it's a separate category). This month I've been in the kitchen a LOT!!! But, I love saving money!

Goals:

Groceries (including all household items): $200/$700

Medical: $150/$100 (MRSA is expensive!!!)

Gas: $97/$550

Kids' activities: $880/$1700

Things I'm going to try to curb this month and I hope to bank the difference in our vacation account:

Eating out: 0!!!

Coffee: 0!!!

Extra income (hopefully!):

Goal: $555/$400

(Dh occasionally gets "tips" for his services as a priest - wedding, funerals, etc. He has a funeral next week. I also hope to sell some things on line. And, that will be banked in our vacation account!!)

I only count extraneous purchases (not bills, groceries, etc). DD and DS have February birthdays so this is a month where we try to spend very little extra outside of birthday expenses.

Feb 1: $15 on a birthday present for DS's friend, $5 on Valentines for the kids to give their friends

Feb 2: $0

Feb 3: $30 with DH taking DS out to lunch which was well worth it to have the time with just DS as DD is a force of nature and we rarely get to be with just DS

Feb 4: $5 on Valentine's day candy bars for DD, DS, and DH, $10 on burgers for all between AHG and BSA meetings

Feb 5: $2.50 on a latte

Feb 6: $0.98 on a Redbox movie to watch with DD on "girl's night"

Feb 7: $7 for Nerf darts for DS (50% off on Clearance at Target)

Feb 8: $10 on dinner for DH and me because we went to a meeting right after work and had no time for dinner

Feb 9: $3.99 on a pair of jeans for DD at Goodwill, $10 for a shirt for me at JCP, $5 on BOGO free Jamba Juice, $15 for a watch for DD (Birthday present)

Feb 10: $0

Feb 11: $14 on dinner for 4 between AHG and Scouts

Feb 12: $0

Feb 13: $0

No spend days: 4/10

Total so far: $114.48

So far so good.

2/8 -- $772 car repair, $20 lunch while waiting for car to be repaired

2/9 -- $45 chess tournament entry fee

2/10 -- $0

2/11 -- $192 car repair (stupid pothole!)

Another car repair!? I'm so sorry!!!

I was goign to go shopping today for groceries and realized that I could make due! We are having chicken noodle soup (I had the broth from a chicken we had last week). I just needed noodles. So, my ds volunteered to make them! Woohoo! I wonder how long I can do this?

I like the new thread title. It fits my spending this month much better. As I spent so-o-o little in January + our school year started on 1st Feb., I knew this month's total would be a bit bigger. I'll post mid-month totals on the 15th, but so far I know I've spent ~$800 on groceries, almost $100 on eating out, and ds#2's expenses so far are:

school costs = $47 (on required workbooks for maths & science)

sailing team = $20 (van fee to practice)

summer hockey = $100 (he plays for 2 teams)

Hockey Academy = $320

Premier hockey team = $$$ (not sure yet how much, but anticipate the season to be $400+)

SeaScouts = $205 (PreRegatta camp, 2 Regattas, term fee, new uniform pants)

So total spent on ds#2 is almost $700, not including Prem. Hockey fees, and other school costs (subject fees, school donations, etc.) that I haven't yet recieved invoices for. The only bright spot in this is as much of ds#2's sport fees become due during term 1 and we don't have regattas / camps term 2 in scouts, term 2 (May-July) should have very little extra costs from ds#2. Hopefully I will begin to get some teaching days soon to help pay for the above expenses.
