s/o CM Language Arts, an idea for poetry copywork

I am loving all the CM threads going on, and wanted to share what we've been doing for poetry.

 

We are using AO Year 3, reading several poems a day aloud together. We discuss the poems if either of us have thoughts (which we almost always do) but keep it very conversational and casual. Sometimes DD likes to try and figure out rhyme scheme, meter, alliteration, metaphor, and other poetic elements. Other times she just wants to talk about a certain line that she really likes, or a word she is confused about. Often she points out the Biblical imagery she sees in the poem.

 

Once a week, she chooses her favorite poem to copy. She wanted to make a special copybook for these poems, so she designed this:

She is still learning cursive so for now her poems are copied in print, and if she wants to she draws a picture to go with the poem. Here is an example:

At 8, DD is thoroughly enjoying poetry that I studied in college, and she will also have a beautiful keepsake of her favorite poems. As I said in another post, every time we implement an aspect of CM education, we absolutely love the results.

Do you use anything else for LA other than copywork and reading?

 

I am have struggles right now, wondering what to leave off and what to continue with (we need to cut back), so this is why all of the questions. Please tell your dd her work is beautiful!

Does she work on the poem over the week? or all at once? She usually does the copywork in one sitting, and the drawing in another, usually working for 30-45 minutes at a time. If the poem is really long, though, we definitely break it up. I really let her decide how she does it and how long she works. She works slowly and carefully, and enjoys this time. If she hated it or wanted to rush through we would change things up.

 

Do you use anything else for LA other than copywork and reading? We are using AO year 3.5 literature, and she does oral narrations 2-3x daily and written narration 1-2x weekly (sometimes less), either from lit, history, or science. We choose dictation from her literature (2x weekly), and copywork from the Bible (1x weekly). We also use Rod and Staff Grammar 3, doing most of it orally and skipping as we need to, and AAS.

I have my dd do that in one of those Mead Primary Journals that have the top half blank and the bottom half lined. She illustrates just one or two sentences from Y1 readings. But I noticed that next week in LLATL there is the creation poetry book (like the one your dd is doing) scheduled. I am sooo excited about this and so is dd. Although she dilly dallies around when writing she loves the end result. I showed her the pic of your dd's book and she really likes it!

Neat! I've never looked at LLATL but always been interested in it. It incorporates spelling, grammar, and lit doesn't it? How do you like it?

 

We bought this blank book, but I will buy this one next, or an even bigger one if I can find it. I think the larger book would be better for the longer poems. Since she only writes in it once a week, one book should last her a semester.

Yes, both dd and I truly do enjoy LLATL. It is based on Ruth Beechick methods were are pretty close to CM.

~~There is copywork and dictation (depending on the level),

~~only a few spelling words as rules are taught and spelling comes from copywork,

~~the reading is simple but the lessons done with the reading are what is important---plus we get tons of reading elsewhere anyway,

~~there are fun projects,

~~grammar is light so it doesn't take all, day but is still effective

~~writing is like the grammar: light but effective.
