mymommy1
I ordered the novel yesterday after seeing it on a blog. My questions is about the guide. If you use it, do you think you use it to it's value ($20)? Also, if you are using it with world geography study, do you follow the order of the Sassafras book? It wouldn't make sense to change the story around, right? Then what do you do if you want to do a country not in the book? I have been using parts of EE so far. I have a 2nd grader that will love the stories, but doesn't write much, so the notebook/lapbook stuff will mostly go undone. I plan to have him do one entry a week in a nature journal with drawings and dictation. I also have a PK4 that won't need anything but good books and animal cards. Thanks! Dahliarw
You should join the elemental science yahoo group (there may be one just for sassafras too, I dunno). There are a lot of people on there who have experience with it. If you don't think the workbook will get used, then don't get it. You can totally make up your own doing what you described. scrapbabe
The teacher's guide is mostly directions for using the notebook. It has a list of extra living books to read and an activity. But the majority of it is instructions for incorporating the notebook. If you're not using the notebook I wouldn't think you'd get a ton out of the teacher's guide. Mom2OandE
Oh that looks really neat! I'd never heard of it before.

mymommy1
Thanks. I think I'll skip the guide.
Chelli
Well, I am incorporating Sassafras into our world geography studies and I'm doing the continents/countries in the order they are found in the novel. The kids do not travel to very many specific countries, but they do hit every continent except Europe. I am using the guide and logbook to stretch out the time they spend on a continent until we are done with the countries there, but it would be very easy just to use the topics covered in the chapter and expand on that info with library books and videos if you don't want to do the writing component.
