ZeeMommy
Has anyone used or supplemented their regular math instruction with the Life of Fred series? Does it offer any kind of advantage to any of the other math programs/curricula, or is it more useful in latter stages of math?
Maplecat
We worked through Apples and Butterflies the summer between K and first. My son enjoyed them and they were a lot of fun. Fred has increased his math enjoyment.

pehp
We are on Apples.it is a supplement, & my son enjoys it a lot! Real-life math but lighthearted.....we will continue using LOF for a while. I think!!
UrbanSue
I only have experience up to Dogs so far but I would think they'd be fine to read with a Ker. If it's not fun, set it aside and go back to it in a year. My 6yo loves Fred.
kirstenhill
My K'er is enjoying Apples a lot as a supplement. He's advanced in math, so Apples is pretty easy for him...but it is super fun for both him and DD8

boscopup
My K'er loves Fred! We're in Cats now. I'm not sure how it would go with K math, as we didn't start it until after we started Singapore 1A. Agree with above though. If kid doesn't like it, set it aside for a year, then try again. Arboreal TJ
LoF is a hit with my Kers and my DH ;-)
Mélie
My kindergartener is loving LOF! He's been through Apples-Cats and is going through them again before we move on to Dogs.
JenniferLynn
I wish I had started with DD6 when she was in K last year. She is reading Apples now and loving it, though on the regular math schedule she is finishing up Singapore 2B. The prose story approach to math is really appealing. I plan to start with my pre-K DS4 this Spring.
bakpak
I kind of asked this question before on the Accelerated Learner board, but didn't get too much response. What's the earliest anyone's successfully used LOF Apples? I think my 3.5yo might be ready, but not sure. She's pretty good with math (can ID, count & write up to 100, counts by 10s, simple addition, time (hours & half-hours), a few fractions). She's on a huge reading kick right now, but I'm sure she'll be back on math soon enough. She has a great attention span - we read lots of chapter books. I think my DH would enjoy reading the LOF books with her...

I don't think there's any harm in trying - if she doesn't like it, you can just put it away for a few months and try again.
Grover
DS started LOF when he got to yellow Miquon at 5ish. He raced through the books and now (6) is just finishing Ice cream - mostly due t my procrastination because I didn't want to reach Fractions too soon... now that kidneys, liver and mineshaft have arrived I can stop holding him back so much, lol! DD is 3.5 and is wanting to start but I won't let her until she can record her own answers (because I'm mean, and because she needs the motivation to work on her writing). I also don't let them start until they can alternate reading the chapters with me. She's nearly there, so I'll have to let her start soon.
