Gwenny
I'm looking for a cheap internet for my mother that she can browse the internet with. She has a laptop and would like some sort of internet access that will work wherever she takes the laptop. I know next to nothing about computers and internet, so I'm clueless. She doesn't have a phone service or cable. Any suggetions?

Alessandra
1. Can she go somewhere with free internet, like a public library or Starbucks? 2. Get an iPad or other tablet with cellular -- around $15/month, I think. She would have to be careful not to go over the data limit. 3. Use a smartphone. 3. Some people/families may qualify for reduced price internet, if they do not exceed income limits. Comcast has a program in Chicago called Internet Essentials. My understanding is that government regulators want to expand service, because there is a growing 'internet divide,' and they are pressuring companies to offer more choices. It might be worth inquiring (perhaps with a senior's advocacy group) if anything is going to be available in your area. 4. Dial up used to be OK, but websites now are so loaded with images & other content that it would be a nightmare now.

Guest inoubliable
comcast's program is only for families with at least one child in the home that qualifies for reduced lunches or food stamps. At least in my state. Comcast was told by Congress to provide internet at a $65 price point, though, as a condition of snapping up NBC. Apparently the key to get a break from a big provider is to live near Google Fiber.
