swollen face under eyes. . . ?

I took allergy medicine and it didn't touch it. It doesn't hurt or itch and I have no other sickness going on. Today it is across to under both eyes and puffier in the morning. The strange thing is one of my kids woke up with the same thing under one eye this morning. Has anyone had anything lately that sounds like this? Now that two of us have it. . . . ? I wonder if it's some kind of 'something' going around.

Could be your sinuses. Especially if the puffiness disappears by the afternoon. It doesn't mean you have an infection, just that fluid is pooling in your sinuses while you're asleep. Not uncommon in the winter. If you start to feel pain or notice other swelling anywhere around your eyes, then see a doctor.

I wondered about this too. The puffiness is only a tiny bit better in the afternoon and I don't 'feel' like I have any sinus issues going on, no runny or stuffy nose. I do feel like my throat might be swollen a little though it is not sore at all. Could that be sinus stuff?

Yep. Sinus drainage can irritate the throat. It can also make you nauseous. If you don't feel better in a few days, or the swelling gets much worse, you get a headache, or you teeth start hurting, then make an appointment. If you start seeing swelling over your eyelid or brow bone, or the swelling under your eyes gets worse, then get in immediately, because that could be orbital cellulitis...and that's an emergency. However, that generally only occurs in one eye, not both, so the bilateral swelling makes me think sinus drainage. But internet diagnosis is sketchy at best, so always consult a doctor if you're feeling like something is "off".

Thanks. The strange thing has been the lack of any other symptoms. No headache, teeth hurting, nothing that feels like sinus stuff. My eyes and eyelids don't seem to be involved at all. I appreciate the input.

although I don't know if it's contagious, It could be orbital cellulitus.

I looked that up and it really doesn't seem anything like the symptoms they list. My eyes and eyelids don't really seem to be involved at all. More like where the bags under your eyes are and then a little further down.

Did you have any other symptoms besides swelling?

It felt a little strange, but that was it. I didn't see redness or anything. I went to my doctor because I couldn't see well out of that eye due to the swollen skin under it. She thought the skin looked slightly red, but I didn't detect that.

My eyes are not swollen or swollen shut at all. My skin. below the bags of my eyes, is a little red and that's also where it's swollen today. Did yours come on gradually and get worse or just one day there was swelling?

It wasn't my eye at all. It was the bag under my eye/upper cheek. It just got so puffy that it obstructed my vision. It started feeling funny before I went to bed and was swollen by morning. I took some Benadryl, thinking that it was allergies. It didn't get any better, so I called my doctor. When I went in I still thought it was allergies, but she said it was cellulitis. I took abx for the infection and Prednisone for the swelling. It got better after a few days. Then it came back about a month later. Same thing (felt funny and swelled up).

OK. Mine took like 3 days before it was even noticeable by someone besides me and now it's starting to go away. I can see where it could be the cellulitis. . . now what to do? No insurance, little $$$ and it seems the last 5/6 times we've been to a doctor the dx has been. . ."hhmmm. . . not sure what this is. . . looks like ? so let's try this first." I hate paying for trial and error doctoring. Feels like such a waste of time and $$$$.

you should be very careful with any kind of infection in your eye. Cellulitus can affect your eyesight and brain! Be careful. I don't know what kind of over the counter would work but this is what happened with me.

I got dx by the doctor with orbital cellulitus. They gave me eye-drops - it did nothing

went back - they gave me oral meds. - nothing.

went back again and they sent me to an ophthalmologist. She gave me an ointment (more like a gel - the consistency of gel toothpaste). That's what did the trick.

I was also told to do warm compresses several times a day. This gets the blood moving up to the infection to aid in healing.

I had a recurrence within a month but fortunately had the meds already. I was also dx with blepharitis by the ophthalmologist and try to keep my eyelids clean.

Swelling is 95%, if not more, gone. There is a mild redness/dryness of skin right on bone just below bags of eyes. I've been researching the cellulitis and will continue to watch for a recurrence. Thank you so much for all your input. Just to be safe I threw out my mascara though I rarely use it. Thought it best to just be safe.

Other things you should consider - have you changed your facial soap, laundry soap, lotion, make-up or anything else that comes in contact with your skin. I know someone who is very sensitive to everything and will have a reaction very easily.

Rarely wear make-up and usually use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I did go ahead and throw out my mascara since it's the only make-up I use maybe twice a week. Everything else is the same. Last year this time I had a strange hive thing going on and the only common denominator was my cycle. When this started with my eyes I thought it was hives too. I will definitely be paying attention next month.

Thanks for the input.
