A quick update on the wrestling conundrum

For those who remember, dh was over-eager about youngest ds wrestling, ds "hates" it.

He has been continuing with wrestling, but dh has also relaxed about it; he sees that this was not heading in a positive direction. He has skipped a few matches that were going to be quite far away (i.e. 2 hours) or double-header type matches over two days. I expect he will finish this season, but not continue next year unless ds requests it.

I think Spy Car may not be around right now, but if he does happen to see this, I just want to say I really appreciate your thoughts on this, Bill. It helped me see it more objectively and not like such a "girl." Bill's posts really did make me realize that there's a perseverance skill involved in this sport that I can really admire and I'm glad I was not overly quick to interfere with that lesson.

All of you, thanks for your thoughts and prayers on my behalf.

I didn't see your original post, but wanted to say that my oldest began wrestling in Grade 3. He was a 'late' starter to some people, but he was modestly successful for 2 years. He quit, surprisingly, in grade 5 but returned again in 8th grade. He was more successful that year and now, in his 5th year, he is wrestling for his high school varsity team. His record is about even, but he is sticking with it and has big plans for his team by his senior year!

So, I guess I want to say that even it isn't right for you son at this point doesn't mean he'll never wrestle.

Wrestling takes a lot out of the kids. It's one on one and there is a definite winner and loser, plus, sometimes it hurts! It's not like a team sport where you all share the loss, it's all on the individual.

Thanks for the update...I remember reading it, but I don't think I responded...lack of time that day most likely...I will say that when my kids wanted to start doing activities, we explained that once they started, they had to finish out the year (barring any major issues). That in order to give it a fair shake a good effort had to be put in even if it did get a bit hard. Perseverance is a hard skill to learn.

Hugs to you and I'm glad that it's working out.

Thank you for sharing that. I think dh is realizing this - that it is possible ds will pick it back up at another point. I admit, this ds does have the personality to be good at wrestling. But, yes, it is not an easy sport in any sense and it is hard to overcome what is hard about wrestling to be good at it.

I was very pleased to read my advice was helpful to you. We men (usually) do come around to facing reality eventually.

I hope it has all continued to work out.

Best regards,

Bill
