Sleepovers and lack of sleep.....

..... mine. Hobbes had a friend sleep over. I sent them to their room at 9. At 10 I told them to put their light out. At 11 I told them to go to sleep. At around 12 I got to sleep myself with an alarm set for 8.30 so I could get up and light the fire.

At 6.30 (well before dawn) they were awake and talking loudly. I'm being perfectly pleasant but Hobbes and I will have a little talk after his friend goes about moving to the other end of the house to be noisy in the early morning.

Off to spread grit on the icy road: the gritting lorry doesn't come up here, so it's down to me. Off with a sled to climb up the hill to the grit bin, then back down to spread grit with a shovel. Joy.

But at least a beloved old friend is coming for lunch.

Grump, grump.

He just needs to choose his friends more carefully :tongue_smilie:. Now, had it been one of our boys ... why, even DS5 can sleep until 10 am with no trouble at all.

Do you get to sit on the sled coming back down the hill, or is it too full of grit? Sledding down sounds wonderful fun.

Hope your day gets better and you have a lovely lunch.

I think sleepovers should be permanently banned. My daughter came home from every single one tired and cranky.

When kids slept at our house they seemed to get about 3 hours sleep. Then there was the child who announced at 11:30pm that she wanted to go home. And then her mother tells me when she picks her up at midnight that she has some "phobia" about sleeping at other peoples houses but she thought they would try again. I am so pleased I could be part of your experiment.

DDs are well past that stage but it's one of their favorite memories that they mentioned ever so often. For a few years I ran a Keepers of the Faith girls group that met every other Friday afternoon. It always seemed to turn into a sleepover with anywhere from 1-4 girls spending the night with my dds. DH said he was always careful when going in to kiss them good night because he didn't know who was sleeping on the floor! Most of the time they took over the livingroom with air mattresses/sleeping bags/couch cushions on the floor. I just always made sure that the next day was a quiet day at home. Also, in order to spend the night, everything had to be straightened up and put away in the morning when they got up. Lots of fun memories!!

My secret to successful sleepovers is letting the kids sleep in our camper, when it's parked in the driveway.

Sleepovers are so much fun that I'm fine with it as long as they aren't big cranks the next day. If they are, that means for the next sleepover they get picked up at 10ish to come home and sleep. It didn't take long for them to learn to cope.

Unfortunately I have to walk back down as the sled races ahead, twists, bumps into my legs.... I do feel socially virtuous after gritting the road though: I have winter tyres and could probably get up the hill without the grit, but not everyone does.

Oh, Laura! My dd just spent had a sleepover with one of her friends from Sat into Sun. I was told by the Mom that dd and her friend were up at 1 and 2 am!!! DH and I met friend's Mom and Dad half way at a meeting place before church this morning. Their kids stayed home. On our way to church I asked DD what time they finally went to sleep and she replied 3 - 3:30! UGH! So be happy it was only 10 or 11??? :) Are you sure they went to sleep at 11 even?!?! :}

My dd13 had a sleepover with two friends this past summer. They slept in a tent in the backyard, which I figured would be perfect since they are all talkers (understatement!). What I didn't think about was my spazzy reaction to them possibly keeping the neighbors awake. I could hear them talking and laughing out there and was afraid our elderly neighbors would be upset, so I kept texting them, about every 1/2 hour. I was certain that the neighbors were up and must be exhausted. I honestly don't know if the girls ever slept that night. The next day, I was dragggggging and miserable. I took the girls home and had a major talk with dd, banning sleepovers here forever. I apologized to the neighbors, who said, "Oh, we saw the tent out there and wondered if someone was going to sleep in it. We didn't even hear them!" How this was possible is beyond me. I guess I just need to :chillpill: .

Tell him next they are up so early, start the fire, get dressed and then grit the road!

Then they can make themselves breakfast. By then who cares if they wake you up, the hard work is done! But if they make a cup of tea to be waiting for you when you get up, it goes a long way too!

Now there's an idea. Thanks for making me laugh.

Well, the last sleepover dd19 had over Christmas break... they went to bed at 6:30 am...... I think I got to sleep at 5 am... we had a day trip that day and I was toast. After an entire semester with live in college dd and sleep deprivation taken to ridiculous levels, it was the final straw. Great young adults, love them to pieces, but you don't go into someone's home and keep them up all night. Dd said she tried to get them quiet, but it didn't work. I told dd that she was big and from now on they can meet for coffee and if they come over, out by midnight.
