Questions about the disabling Java thing....

(sorry, I know someone already started a thread on this but I thought it might be helpful to actually have one with the word "java" in the subject line)

So, what's the big deal? Please, I need it in layman's terms. How & Why to Disable Java for Dummies.

I saw the first thread ("Boo, this....."). Saw a headline on a major news website this morning. Googled "how to disable java" and got a billion hits. So it seems like something to take seriously.

Then, I notice one of the articles hit was an internet security expert's site. Dated August 2012. If this was a known problem then, why (1) are we - um, me, anyway - just now hearing about it in major media and (2) why did this site, redesigned in December, use java based functions if it's problematic?

Please, techies among us, help me understand the issue and what action needs to be taken!

Thanks, Lynnae. After reading the article, I am still flummoxed by the time sequence (article is several months old) and have a few more questions.

Is there a D-Date for when a big "crash/attack" is supposed to occur for those attached to java?

Is there an anticipated fix date?

What will I not be able to do if I disable java? Not use some WTM site features? Not access my online banking? I suppose I would have to actually disable it to know for sure, but any guesses?

Huh? I don't get it. I read the boo that sucks thread and still don't get it. Can someone give me the cliff notes on why I should not have java.

Haha, Scarlett, I guess that's what I'm asking for!

I suppose I should just hop offline altogether and go finish up some quilt squares.

Good questions - I was wondering too.

Another one - am I going to easily be able to re-enable Java at some appropriate time?

Also, if I have a security program that gets real-time updates of new viruses and fixes, am I covered? Or do I still have to disable Java anyway?

Can't answer most of your questions, but I haven't had many problems since I disabled Java yesterday morning. A few sites have seemed a little glitchy, but nothing major. I've still been able to do my banking, and this site runs just perfectly.

I'm a little confused by the timeline, too.

I read elsewhere that the problem is with Java update 7.1.

To disable it, you can run NoScript. If you use Firefox, the add-on is here: https://addons.mozil...ript/developers

Otherwise, NoScript is here: http://noscript.net/?ver=2.6.4.2 . I don't know if it runs on other browsers.

Google Chrome now asks your permission to run Java on a per-site basis.Keep in mind this is Java, not Javascript. Look in the Control Panel, Programs and Features, to see if you have Java. This site now tells me that my java is disabled. No, I don't know how to enable it again.
