First Form Latin - DVDs? Grammar Charts?

I've read most of the threads tagged First Form. Many of them were dated 2010 & 2011. (I checked sigs and didn't see many people continuing with the 'Form series. What happened, people?)

I'm looking at ordering First Form for eldest dd next year. She's completed Prima Latina & Latina Christiana I. She's doing the LC I games book this year to keep from getting rusty.

  • Should I get the DVDs? (This dd doesn't do well yet working on her own & she didn't like tthe PL or LC DVDs.)
  • Should I get the grammar charts?
  • Should I get the flashcards or have her make them? (We made them for Prima. We had them for LC. She's making Spanish flashcards this year & it seems to be more of a time waster than a help.)

The guy on the DVDs does speak incredibly fast, especially during the recitations...I use the pause button a lot to give us time to finish our recitation since we don't speak quite as fast, lol! I have found the DVDs to be very helpful. He explains things very clearly and thoroughly. If I already knew Latin, I would find the student textbook and the teacher guide to be sufficient, but since I am learning Latin along with my daughter I need the additional explanation as well. We bought the flashcards, I figured my kids would eventually fall behind in making the flashcards and use that as an excuse for not studying them, so having premade ones takes care of that :D . I don't have the grammar charts but I will be ordering them in the future...I think they would be very handy.

I am happy with FFL and plan on continuing with the series.

We never used the DVDs for LC or PL either. But I have found I like them for FF. If nothing else, I learn something from them and am better able to teach the lesson. Often he will give a little tip that isn't in the book and I jot it down in the T.M. for teaching to my dd. So she watches them with me, then we do the lesson together. I also teach it in co-op, so watching him helps me lead that class.

I do not use the flashcards. Staring in LCI I had kids make their own in my co-op class that I taught.

And I wish I had the grammar charts. for LCI I made my own, but by the end of the year, I had a stack of posters. I think they would be nice all in one to point to for recitations. Hope that helps.

Ok, so mixed on the flashcards, yes on the grammar charts, and probably yes on the DVDs?

I looked at the samples of the FFL DVD & it didn't make any sense to me. Despite talking too fast, the material makes sense when he presents it?

I just watched the sample lesson on the website (I didn't before I ordered the DVD), and yes, the material makes sense when he presents it. The recitation was all review; everything had been covered before to the extent that the student should have it mastered well enough to recite it along with him (and my daughter can keep up, amazingly enough). The new material was all from the textbook, just with more explanation and examples.

  • 5 weeks later...

Update: Ordered the whole kit & caboodle from HSBC (kit + DVD + flashcards). Held off on the grammar charts because I think I'll use my $10 Christmas gift from Memoria Press to order their desk charts.

I watched the first few lessons on DVD last night & really like the teacher! (He's funny.) The program seems to move SO FAST. I'm hoping I'll be able to keep up. (I'm sure dd#1 will be just fine.) I got myself an extra student workbook.

I noticed that he said he won't cover everything -- like he doesn't cover new vocab usually. That'll be interesting ... I'm so slow that when he was doing some of the oral problems at the end, I could barely get the basic 1st person present verb form in my head before he gave the answer (like the 3rd person future form of whatever verb it was). Eek!

Anyway, just updating for anyone who finds this thread later or who is suffering from the same "What to buy" questioning that I was. :coolgleamA:

We have the whole set, other than the grammar charts. We used the dvd once, and then never used it again. When I have this new baby though, I may have them watch the dvd for a few lessons. My kids like using Quizlet.com instead of the flashcards. They do it on their iPods and on the computer. I do wish I had the grammar charts though. I plan on getting them in my next Rainbow Resource order.

I also wanted to add how much I like this program. We're on Lesson 10 and the kids from 5th grade to 9th are doing amazingly well.
