Chocolate Lover Posted January 10, 2013 Share Posted January 10, 2013 If you used LoF Elementary Physics did you use it as a primary text, as a supplement to what primary? Did you use an experiment kit with it? Make your own? I need help planning for the year starting in August for 8th grade for my DS who will be 13. Thanks ahead of time. AimeeM Posted January 10, 2013 Share Posted January 10, 2013 I'm the one who used it and posted that I believe the math required is more than the website implies. I do NOT find it suitable for a child with no pre-algebra experience. I would recommend it be used either IN CONJUNCTION WITH preA *or* after preA. My dd didn't enjoy it and she's a very science geared child. I'll admit I was less than impressed and I generally like LOF (although my dd isn't a fan). It wasn't as humorous as the other LOF books and I don't think it touches on the more interesting bits of physics, personally. We were using it as our spine for science. My son loves LoF and is interested in Physics, so he wanted to give this book a try. He has finished Algebra already and is half way through geometry, so I thought this book would be quite easy for him. I was surprised when he told me the Your Turn to Play sections were hard, and he had trouble understanding a few of the questions on the second day. This is probably not what everyone else wants to hear, but it's perfect for us! I was thinking about having DS go through LOF Physics this spring (we'll finish his science program about two months before everything else) to get him geared up for algebra-based physics in the fall.
