NEVER, EVER Again! Salon tale...

Wow. Seriously??? My daughter wanted to do something freaky and "emo" on her hair. OK. Well, I'm even nice enough to pay for it (and OUCH!). So we go to a "great" salon. The job to take her blonde hair to black with colored streaks takes FIVE AND A HALF hours! And when she walks out, there is a spot right front and center at the hairline that was MISSED by the color! Are you kidding me? $250 dollars for THAT? Arrrgh. Not to mention that it looks like plain black hair with a couple of minor color streaks.

My daughter said, "Never, EVER again in my lifetime will I spend 5 and a half hours in a hair salon."

No kidding. I knew you were low maintenance when I warned you against this, due to the ongoing processes it will take to keep it looking like this. Apparently, you cannot just dye it back blonde. You have to foil highlight all over a lighter color and keep doing that for a few months. Fun, fun....

People really do this regularly? The irony is that her hair is naturally stunning, not mousy or boring. We always want what we don't ave and you can't tell teens anything. Arrrgh. Screaming in my head.

I've never dyed my hair in my life. My teen has done it about a dozen times. I cringe, and want to discourage her, but it always ends up looking really nice. Right now she's a med blond with red-brown highlights. Her natural color is a blondish-brownish-auburnish color. I don't know why she doesn't just leave it alone. Today she has purple streaks that wash out, so apparently she woke up and went "I need purple streaks today."

I don't know why teens don't save their effort for when they're forty and can benefit from a little product.

I'm so sorry. I color my hair to cover the grey and that with a cut costs me $60 and 1 1/2 hours. I have never in my life gone an entirely different color. Well, hopefully.... she's learned something.

I pay for the nice cut, but go to Sally's Beauty Supply (JUST LIKE THE STYLIST HAD TO DO TODAY) and pay under $10 for my color, which looks great, and do it myself.

Frugal is my middle name.

To their credit, I was given the streak color bottle, since they had to go get it for her.

I'm sorry she didn't get the outcome she wanted. Is her hair naturally blonde and now it is almost all black? I can't get past the price...seriously? I guess I can't get past the time either. 5.5 hours?! You are a generous mom. She will always remember that you allowed her to try it. That's pretty cool, even if right now, she has a hard time with the results.

That makes me cringe for you! My momma taught me the importance of salon colored/cut hair (give me a break-she's from Texas :tongue_smilie: ) but to spend that kind of time and money and it not look fabulous is a crime. I hope your dd appreciates her beautiful hair from now on!

God Bless,

Elise in NC

Yes, naturally sun-streaky looking blonde that just glows. You can pick her out in a crowd by her gleaming hair. Now black with a few aqua streaks. Very few, and hardly visible. She looks like a thousand other women now.

And the price (hyperventilate!)...

The cut is pretty nice, at least.

She did thank me. I tried not to say too much other than, "Oh WOW! That's really something!"

For that kind of money, I am expecting movie star stunning perfection. I was disappointed. I actually have to repair the bleached spot in front that didn't get colored along with a few streaks in the side. I asked, "Why didn't you SAY anything?" She didn't want to make waves....arrrgh! She has no problem making waves with ME hourly!

Yep...in 5 1/2 hours, I did all errands, two bank runs, dry cleaning, Starbucks and still had time to go home for a snack!

Holy cow. I'd go back and throw a fit, and tell them to repair the splotch. When I was in college I had a local chain salon give me a new cut, dye it platinum blonde, and do highlights. From what I remember, the whole thing didn't take more than a couple of hours and cost right around a hundred bucks, and it looked fantastic. You got robbed.

I pointed it out immediately. She just said, "Oh yeah...I missed that."

Yeah, well you should have deducted fifty bucks or a hundred then!

I don't miss anything when I do a job. I was pretty disappointed with her color skills. I am good with color. I probably could have pulled this off at 1/10th the cost, but I don't have the setting to keep it off my carpet!

That is crazy. But it could always be worse, and I'm glad the cut was cute anyway.

I have spent a lot of time in salons, and on multiple occasions, I have heard of customers coming back to getting something touched up that was missed. It's completely acceptable to do that! For that price, or any price, I would go back and have them fix the missed spot immediately. I would ask for someone else, and also express your disappointment in how it turned out overall. Perhaps there is something they can do to remedy.

I agree with those that say go back and get it fixed. This isn't a "get what you pay for" sort of situation. You paid a lot and you should expect a competent hair dresser for the price. They may not do anything about the streaks of color, but the black should have covered everything. Don't wait long though or they may try to tell you it is just growth showing.

I would call the owner ASAP and have a chat with them. It is your daughter's hair, but your cash. You are the customer! I would insist on the hair being fixed and a discount or free touch up in 5 weeks, for the extra time to come back in.

Did you know ahead of time that it would be a 5.5 hour ordeal? Did you know the price ahead of time? Something doesn't seem right, with a hairdresser that takes that long to do the job and then has an "oh well' attitude! ? ! $250 for that level of either inexperience or incompetence is not right. It has to be one or the other and I would ask the owner which word she would like to use to describe her employee!

$250 for cut and color at a nice salon sounds about right where I live. That doesn't include the tip! I go to a friend who is a professional but now a SAHM. She charges me about $65 for full color/cut. Now that I just need touch-ups its only $45.

I'm sure the chain salons charge way less than the fru-fru salons

Um. Wow.

She absolutely should have fixed that before you left. Absolutely. No excuse. Even the cheapest place will fix a mistake. An expensive place should have fallen all over themselves and kissed your heinie to fix it fast and make you happy.

If I were you, I would call them, ask for the OWNER and tell them what transpired. If the owner doesn't fall all over him/herself and kiss your heinie, then you should post the name of the salon and their blasé and crappy service all over the internet AND tell everyone you encounter about it, too. And I seriously mean everyone. If it were me: girl at the checkout, let me tell you about this crappy salon. Hi miss-trying-on-a-jacket-near-me, that looks fab on you, let me tell you about this crappy salon. Hey gas fella, thanks for checking the oil, let me tell you about this crappy salon. Thanks for holding the door open, sir, let me tell you about this crappy salon. Well, hello morning bluebird, let me tell you about this crappy salon.

I'm not kidding.

I recently had my hair colored (foiled) for the first time because the gray was getting to be too much. Sheesh, I put it off as long as I could, but I'm looking at 50 in March, and it was time. Anyhow, the whole job took maybe 2 hours but she was a little behind because she had to do someone's wedding hair in between. Anyhow, I love it! She noticed right off, however, that she missed a spot near the front, and she offered to fix it. I declined (I wanted to get outta there, and it wasn't really noticeable), but at least she offered. It surprises me that your daughter's beautician didn't offer, even for her to come back another day.

I have never dyed my own hair, but for the past year I've dyed my son's hair a variety of colors. It costs $20 for the bleach to strip it, and then another $10 for the color. It really only takes a couple of hours to do the whole process, which is only needed once every 6 months or so!

Oh yeah. We pay about $15 every 3 months to get his hair cut professionally. She does an excellent job!

There is NO WAY it should have cost that much or should have taken that long. Blond to black is easy - heck ANY color to black is easy. Dark colors to lighter colors is hard on the hair, takes a long time, and is expensive. Really, the hair is super fried going from dark to blond, especially if it was colored.

As for the streaks, those are the easiest - just go to Hot Topic and get a color and away you go. Well, always getting the exact streaks is hard to do yourself, but if someone else can do it it can be easy.

I've paid that amount and spent several hours having my hair colored and cut. I went from a very light brown to a dark red. Lots of my time was waiting before and after the actual coloring, and even during my cut, meaning I was sitting in the chair watching them do something to someone else's hair. I didn't have one person giving me 100% attention. I had one person who colored it and one person who cut it. That meant 2 tips on top of the nearly $300 charge. However, they were totally willing to work on something I didn't feel satisfied about. They even allowed me to come back within a reasonable time for them to fix something for free. I went back to have my bangs trimmed differently and it was no charge. Please do call and explain the color wasn't full coverage and you need to know how they can fix it. Hopefully you'll get back in free!

We go to a local "cut rate salon" (sorry couldn't resist the pun) due to dd's allergies. She cannot be in a salon that does color, processing, perms, or nails due to all the chemicals. She also cannot get her hair washed with just any shampoo either due to severe eczema. Both dds have very long, thick hair and dd 1 has VERY curly dry hair. They charge us $20/cut which is an amazing price given the amount of hair dds have. I get mine cut there too for a little less.

However, I thought I'd check out a local salon many ladies have been telling me about. A very basic cut from an entry level stylist is $40. A more experienced stylist can charge up to $80, for a hair cut only. Shampoo/blowdry is extra. After thanking them for their services list and brochure, I decided to stay at our discount salon.

I don't work in a salon now, but I still hold my cosmetologist license. Whether you paid $25 or $250, the missed color spots should have been fixed. No excuse for that. Not makign waves? I understand- my Dd would have hated it but not known what to say. Why didn't you speak up when you picked her up and paid?

Did you know ahead of time the cost? Time can be hard to pin down- SweetChild's highlights come up in about 10 mins, and Diamond can sit with the strongest bleach under heat for an hour and still not be light enough.

Definitely go back and tell them you're not happy with the result. They need to fix what was not done well- the uncolored spot- UGH!

If they did what she/you asked for, they have no responsibility to "undo" it at no charge just because you changed your mind. You will probably never match her natural color- and it may take a very long time and a lot of money- and her hair will be damaged. Black dye is very very hard to get out. Think ahead 6 months from now- she will have 3 inches of new growth. DO NOT COLOR THAT with permanent color (even a blonde- if you want to get back to her natural hair, you have to leave it alone.)- you need to work on only the hair that has the black on it while leaving the roots/regrowth alone. It might result in two-tone hair for a while. IF you want to do anythign to the regrowth to blend it in, use temporary color- liek Loving Care that will wash out in a few shampoos.

Also, even if you're lucky enough to get her hair back to her natural color- if she ever goes for ANY chemical treatment in the next two years or so- highlights, color, perm (who knows- they may come back in style) PleASe tell the stylist about all her processes. I once had a client insist she had her natural hair color, but I could tell be the tone and texture it had extensive damage. She REALLLLLY wanted that 80s poodle perm. A strand test literally made her hair smoke and dissolve. So remember- hair grows about 6"/year. Even if the color looks fine, the chemicals and damage are still there.

VERY IMPORTANT for anyone considering dyeing their hair black: use temporary color- semi- or demi-permanent. It will still "grab" and may take time to fade, but if you realize "WOW! This was fun- I'm ready for it to be fgone now" it will be easier to get rid of. If you really love it then go permanent. I talked Diamond out of dyeing her hair black, and with her thick waist-length hair she;s glad I did. We still do fun-color streaks underneath, and an all-over wash of color- she has a purple tone over her dark brown hair. A fun effect, but easily changed.

Good luck- and keep us posted on the results!

From my understanding it is hard to really go black without it looking fake if you don't know what your doing. I would have made them fix it though especially at that price. I had my hair done based on a VC Andrews book as a teen and it took multiple hours and my mom payed alot for it.

I still remember her sitting there waiting and it is a great memory I have.

I'll be interested to hear if she can ever get it back to her pretty blonde again. My daughter has fabulous blonde hair, but she likes to play with color, too. Since she's only 11, I don't let her do anything permanent. This summer, she wanted to color is teal using Manic Panic from Hot Topic. She'd done colors like purple before with no problem, but for some reason, the teal would.not.come.out! Even months later, parts of her hair still had a green tinge to it. It is finally (mostly) back to normal, but it took months and months and months! I can't imagine if she had gone with black!

Me too. One time I got my hair "done" and it was just a bit darker than I wanted. Nothing was wrong with it except that it was just a bit dark. I went back in and she got it to the color I wanted at no additional charge. For this, I would definitely go back.

Those were the very first words out of my mouth to the stylist. She said, "Yeah, I missed that."

She went on back after that, and saying thank you. The lady at the front immediately said she could fix it. But my daughter had not eaten in maybe 8 hours, and 5.5 of them were in that chair. She was just done and was not going to stay for repairs.

Well, she leaves for school tomorrow. That's it. It was a one shot deal, and there is no time.

Ok, thanks for the advice. The woman at the front desk had had black hair and was now light blonde. She did mention that she had it all bleached a couple of times and a bunch of it fell out, so she got it cut short. I'm hoping that this isn't an awful deal. She has an overseas trip in 6 months and needs to look normal.

Oh, I know. Had a couple of Brillo pad perm results myself over the years!

I really, really wish they had done this. The black is permanent, while the streaks are semi- so they are going to fade out and the black will remain.

Just with drug store semi-permanent, it took 5 months for the pink to wash out.

When I was a teen I wanted a spiral perm. I have very long thick hair. It took about 5 hours and 2 hair dressers and $200 (back in the late 80s). So yeah...it's craziness! I never did have it done again though.

I used to bleach my hair. I did it myself though. It was a lot of work!

Yikes! $200 bucks in the 80's was astounding!

I've never done anything that took 5 hours!

I'm cringing reading all of this because it just keeps getting worse. It doesn't sound like she got what she wanted at all. And, it's permanent dye. I'm naturally fair to medium blonde. I can tell you that she isn't going to "look normal" in 6 months. Well, not unless she leaves it alone and gets a super short cut in 6 months. That does look really cute on some girls. Either way, I'm going to bet this is going to end up being one of those life lessons learned for her.

Yes, I'm starting to cringe myself!

One can only hope she has learned her lesson.

I really am not a fan, after looking at it all day. It just looks like someone else and she is NOT going to want to do the maintenance. This is a girl who can look like a magazine cover if she wants, but prefers rather to roll out of bed and be in class ten minutes later.

$250 and 5.5 hours sounded about right to me (missed spot aside--no excuse for that) 'till I kept reading and eventually got to the part where the chunks were just temporary manic panic. I've had this same thing done to my hair--black with teal streaks (my natural color is gray)--but my bright colors were also permanent. It cost about the same and took a long time because of the multiple processes involved to get the different effects. My hair first has to be dyed black, then the pieces need to be taken to another color (not sure if they strip the color or take them to blonde?), then they can put my brights in. It's costly and does take several hours, but it's very well done...and all permanent! Teal or blue fades quickly even if it is permanent, so being temporary it's likely not going to last long at all.

Yeah I'd be a bit miffed, too.

ETA: yes, the maintenance on a color job like this is pretty hard to keep up with. Sorry if my post seems all negative, that's not my intention. I love black hair with fun color embellishments...just giving the low-down from someone who has been there, done that.

Yeah, I'm really ticked that they aren't permanent! Are you kidding me? They will be gone in two weeks and she will have bleached yellowish hair in her black.
