Jean in Newcastle
I've never watched any of the movies tied to books that I really love for the reason that I don't want to ruin my own vivid imagery. Finally after years, I made an exception with "The LIon and the Witch and the Wardrobe". They changed a few things but basically kept the main gist of the movie and I was overall pleased. We are watching "Prince Caspian" right now and I am appalled. They changed the whole storyline! It isn't even recognizable as the same book. And we're having to tell dh (who has never read the books) who the characters even are because it isn't clear enough even in it's revised storyline. I am really disappointed and feel like they "ruined it". (And yes, I know this is way after it came out but it took me this long to decide to break my own rule and watch it. And now I'm sorry I did.) Chris in VA
Hated that installment of Narnia. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when "they" change the book. Dd agrees with me. I can't imagine writing a book then having someone tamper with it! I know permission is often given, but still.
Joker
Older dd was so upset with the Caspian/Susan romance in the movie! She actually said, out loud, in the theater, "That didn't happen!". We own the first and third installment, but passed on ever watching the second again.
lmrich
I do recall seeing that movie and thinking, well they got that all wrong.
teeleigh2000
Agree wholeheartedly!! When the movie first came out we had just done Prince Caspian as a read aloud in preparation to see the movie. Needless to say we spent the whole movie saying, "That doesn't happen then!", and "They don't even meet each other in the book!", etc..... Although there are some liberties taken in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" I thought they were minimal things such as plot order that did not really change the meaning, but made it easier to follow as a movie. happyhomemaker
It was definitely the worst of the Narnia movies they have done so far. I didn't like it at all, but I thought Voyage of the dawn Treader was much better.
Jean in Newcastle
I'm glad to hear that Voyage of the Dawn Treader was better.

Chelli
I think that is why they won't be making the rest of the films : ( I didn't know this. That makes me sad. My kids have loved the series of movies. Although Prince Caspian has been my least favorite for reasons already mentioned.
Jean in Newcastle
I was explaining to dh that one of the major themes of Lewis in Prince Caspian was how modernism "killed" reception of the spiritual in life. It is one of the main points of the entire book and explains not only the sightings of Aslan but also the whole thing with Bacchus and other mythical creatures. The movie took out that entire theme and substituted some kind of a theme of Peter's desire to go it alone that wasn't part of the book at all. Caitilin
This is how I felt about the LOTR movies. You don't want to get me started on those, I promise! But, though I haven't seen the Narnia movies, and probably wouldn't care even if I did, I feel your pain.
Desert Rat
I felt the same way about Caspian, Jean. Dawn Treader was better. The two I hate the most are The Lightning Thief and The Neverending Story. Talk about butchering! I almost walked out of The Lightning Thief. We had read that series aloud. We had discussed how excited we were to see our favorite characters. Aries, my youngest's favorite, didn't even make it into the movie! I had a hard time keeping the comments to whispers. "That wasn't in the book!" "But, how did they end up there?" I so wanted to walk out, but I'd paid for the movie and was still hoping it would get back on track (and Uma Thurman did make an awesome Medusa). The worst diversion from the books I've ever seen was with the How To Train Your Dragon franchise. But, I saw the movie first so, I didn't have the same visceral reaction. KungFuPanda
Oh? Is Robert Louis Stevenson rolling around in his grave? Nah, nothing too bad. They only completely changed a few major characters, added some 'bonus scenes,' and rewrote ending.

Ds2 is a huge Percy Jackson fan and was extremely disappointed in the movie. Having read the books as well I was too. But ds1, who had never read Lightning Thief, enjoyed the movie. Agree on How to Train Your Dragon. We saw the movie first and it inspired us to read the books. Really, the movie was better! As to the OP, I didn't really remember the content of Prince Caspian when I saw the movie. The only point I recalled was Susan and the Prince did not have any romantic interest.
