Faithr
I just impulse bought some whole chestnuts. Once long, long ago I had hot chestnuts sold on the street in Philadelphia. They were delicious! I have never understood that line: chestnuts roasting on the open fire. Does anyone roast chestnuts? How do you do it? wapiti
I bought some at Whole Foods the other day. They were in the produce section, loose, with paper bags labeled Chestnut Charlie's. That site has roasting instructions. I haven't tried it yet.
lailasmum
Stick a hole in each one with a knife or a skewer (if you don't they will explode) then just put them in the oven at 200C. Keep an eye on them as they can over cook quickly. You can put them under the grill too. they will take about 15minutes to cook.

lailasmum
Ooooh, is that why "on the fireplace we will watch the chestnuts pop. POP POP POP!" ?? Growing up my dad never put the hole in them so our chestnuts were always in tiny pieces removed from the far recesses of the oven and took hours to eat. Giraffe
Once we pierced them, wrapped them in foil, and then put them in the fireplace (with fire). They roasted in just a few minutes, popped a little, and were delicious.

Faithr
Thanks all. My college daughter is coming home for her Christmas break on Thursday. I think we'll try roasting chestnuts as a special welcome home, Christmasy kind of thing. Maybe some hot mulled cider too. (only saw her for a couple weeks over the summer and she didn't come home for Thanksgiving this year, so I wanted to do something special and festive.
