Ellie
Mr. Ellie and I went to the West Coast for 10 days and left French Fry the Wonder Dachsund (and Wrolf the Frenchie) with the neighbor across the street. She's an experienced dog owner, and we had a long conversation about French Fry's housebreaking issues. And yes, it turns out that FF has not the slightest clue about needing to use the outside instead of the inside. The neighbor was faithful and consistent in taking FF out; FF would go out, then come in and pee. :glare: Happily, the neighbor has a nice big room with an impervious-to-puppy-pee floor that she can block off with gates when she cannot be watching the dog every minute. So, our routine since being home is that FF wears a collar and leash all day, and I tether her to a chair leg in whichever room I'm in, as long as I'm in there. I take her out after she naps (whcih is when she's most likely to piddle), making a big deal about going outside to potty, and staying outside until she does, and praising her for that. She goes into her crate every.single.time I leave the house, and at night. We'll see how it goes.
AngieW in Texas
My girls take care of a neighbor's three dachsunds at lunchtime every day. The female is housetrained. The boys are not. The neighbor has tried everything. She has worked with trainers. She has used crate training. NOTHING works. Now the boys are in diapers (which they had already ripped off by lunchtime today). My girls remove the diapers when they take them outside to use the bathroom and put them back on again before they leave.
MomtoCandJ
Where can I find these doggie diapers? I have a two year old male dachshund who sometimes has issues with going potty outside especially since its started to get cold and snow. We don't have the money to buy him a crate yet. We have had since the end of August. He does have a sweater i made him
Ellie
My girls take care of a neighbor's three dachsunds at lunchtime every day. The female is housetrained. The boys are not. My girls remove the diapers when they take them outside to use the bathroom and put them back on again before they leave. Oh great. Well, I do have an out: if I cannot housebreak her--and I'm really giving it my best shot--I can call her real owners and tell them they'll have to find another home for her. I have to put the French bulldog in an enclosure every time I leave the house, because he will piddle (and yes, he really is housebroken. He's just a stinker. :glare: ) So I wouldn't mind crating the dachsund when I leave or at night. It's the never asking to go outside, and going right upstairs or into the office and peeing on the carpet/rugs there when she has to go that is just not ok. AngieW in Texas
She uses these. http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Solution-Washable-Male-Medium/dp/B000FJD5ZS/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1355291796&sr=1-4&keywords=dog+diapers This is for males though. For females you need something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Solution-Washable-Cover-Ups-Purple/dp/B00331B22I/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1355291886&sr=1-1&keywords=dog+diapers+female She puts Kotex pads in them. They're a lot cheaper than the pads made specifically for the diaper. I'm sure you probably aren't supposed to use them, but it hasn't caused any problems for her yet.
