Reya
I had H for 4 hours a day summer before last, prepping him for Kinder, and I had him 1 hour per day during the school year. I met all his IEP objective for the next year in the first 10 days I had him. Math is still a terrible struggle--I never got him to a true K level on that. But he was reading on grade level for phonics-based words throughout K. It was a huge struggle--like something out of an Anne Sullivan/Helen Keller play. Some days, I'd just sleep all afternoon after the four hours with him! I didn't work with him this summer because my family is getting bigger, I need to teach my DD, and his mom really needs to step in and take over. He didn't make any actual progress, but she made some in working with him, and now, in first grade, she is working with him through Explode the Code 1. That's lower than where I had him last year, but he is VERY stubborn, and I have been the ONLY person he will work for in the past. (He'll work with other people watching, but he won't do it for them!!!!) Getting this degree of cooperation with someone else is a huge breakthrough. Now cooperation needs to turn into academic progress and cooperation at school, too.
