In my increasing efforts to study and understand the primitive culture I am stranded in - also known as DH AND THE BOYS - I have pursued attempting to feign interest in some version of their science fiction obssession. This is no small feat for the woman who prefers Bach over Mozart, Chopin over Beethoven, Monet, historical biographies, documentaries, quilting, and vintage lace.

 

Star Trek the original series makes me a nauseous. The Next Generation was completely laughable. Star Wars - oh gag, would someone just let that series die allready????? Disney ought to be taken out and flogged for buying it up so they can make more? I consider it an act of mental terrorism.

 

So, having been slightly surprised that the newish Star Trek movie with Chris Pine was not dreadfully awful, kind of okay, and mildly amusing, I embarked upon a marathon of Star Trek Voyager on netflix while making fabric flowers for dd's wedding.

 

The Borg got me. I like Janeway, I love Chocotay (seriously, put that man in a kilt and ding, ding ladies, we have a winner!!!!!!!!), I like Tom Paris' character, and the holographic doctor amuses me. Neelix, I could live without as well as Kess because the whole telepathic "I Feel..." thing reminds me of counselor Troy - a character they could have marooned on a Romulan planet while the rest of us cheered the scriptwriters on - but, she's not annoying enough to ditch the series over.

 

Sigh... and then I skipped three seasons ahead and watched "endgame 1 & 2". Then, I knew I was in trouble. I knew it the moment that A. I was angry that the scriptwriters should even think that the Tuvoc should be crazy, or that B. killing 7 of 9 and breaking Chocotay's heart was even an option! But worse, I felt kind of sad that they made it home and ended the show. How dare they make it home? I want more.

 

Sigh....I should go get checked for dementia. This is about as unlike me as it can get. I

 

Just call me 2 of 3 (I'll give myself a Borg name taken from the concerto - 23)

Snort. TNG was by far the best of the ST series. Also, I so want to be able to wear a cat suit an heels like Jerri Ryan and look that good in them. James Bond's jaw would drop all the way to the floor. :tongue_smilie:

 

I'm a bit of scifi girl. I ♥ Firefly. Indy and I are currently working our way through all the seasons of Stargate SG-1 (there are 10), which is my and James Bond's hands down favorite show ever. Indy and I are on season 6 right now and good grief it's such a good show. I forgot how good. Plus I get to drool over super hot RDA again. That is one pretty man. 1999-2005 RDA is my personal favorite. Yum.

I love Voyager, but then I love all Star Trek. Wasn't a big fan of the new movie. How dare they mess with the timeline!

 

 

On Next Generation, you need to look for the episode The Inner Light. It is one of my very favorites and won an award.

 

And have you seen the movie Insurrection? I think it is my favorite of them all.

 

Right now I'm watching DS9. I didn't get into it much before, but now I'm watching it all in order and it is jelling more for me. Enjoying Avery Brooks performance.

 

 

And yes, I love Chakotay as well. I just like to watch him....

Yes! Seasons 9 and 10 are just not the same. Yeah, yeah, he makes a few guest appearances, but if I don't get to look at his six in each episode, what's the point?

 

I explained the MacGyver joke in the very first episode to Indy and he decided he HAD to watch MacGyver. We're almost finished with S1, and my goodness what a cheesy show! When he disarmed a missile with a paperclip in the first ep though, Indy was hooked. If we don't watch SG, we watch an ep of MacGyver. I have to say, RDA looks much better in SG. He's not hard on the eyes by any means in MacGyver, but he's much yummier in SG.

 

 

 

 

And yes, I love Chakotay as well. I just like to watch him....

 

Oh, Chakotay! I love him! Mike Tyson can't pull of the Chakotay tatoo. :smilielol5:

I love TNG. I also always loved the corny original series. I was never that fond of DS9. I liked Voyager, but it could get on my nerves. I liked the Janeway character, but she could get so preachy. Tom Paris was great. The whole series was fresh. I was glad they ended it by getting them back home. I would have been sad to have them stranded and all they learned lost. :tongue_smilie:

 

My ds13 saw the trailer to the new movie and said he wanted to see the first one. We have to get it, but I discovered that ST movie #2 and 3 are streamable on Netlix. Last night my son watched #2 (Khaaaaannn!!) He loved it. He can't wait to see the next one.

Well, now that you have indeed joined the dark side, I think the best series EVER was Babylon 5. The creator envisioned the entire five-year story arc before the series even began. It's the meatiest, most philosophical, yet most action-packed series I have ever encountered. Try it--you'll like it! :laugh:

My favorite was TNG too. I'd give it another try. It did get better with age. You'll come to love Piccard. Troy was annoying and rather unnessesary - but I loved Data and Worf. What great characters. Q was my favorite recurring guest. My least favorite series was Voyager, but maybe I should give it another try. I did enjoy Enterprise. Mainly because of Scott Bakula. yum.

I cried the first time I saw it, and the 2nd and the third... And now even after the oh maybe 10th time, it still gets me at the end. I think that last scene really shows what a skilled actor Patrick Stewart is. Love him...

 

 

 

 

I like Best of Both worlds and the chain of Command too.

I loved B-5 right up to the last series. After they "completed" the main story arc, everything after that just seemed goofy to me!

Oh, what a fun thread! I LOVE sic-fi...and there just isn't anything out there right now for me to watch.

 

TNG was a good show. I like Voyager, but not as TNG.

 

Thanks for the Stargate funny video. It's been ages since I've seen that outtake.

 

All of you who 'heart' RDA, stand in line. I've loved him since he was Dr. Jeff Weber on General Hospital. Enjoyed Macgyver. LOVE, love, love Jack O'Neill.

 

Stargate is still my all time favorite TV show. Although Firefly is right up there...too short, that one.

Dh and I fell in love with it. Most think it has something to do with dh's norwegian heritage, but nope, it's all Voyager's fault.

This is one of my top two choices if #5 is a girl. #3 was named Kira after the DS9 character, DH didn't pick up on it until after the birth certificate was filed.

When Voyager was first on decades ago we didn't watch it -- we thought it was pretty bad.

 

Then we started watching it a few years ago, and it was really fun. By that time we had kids, and they enjoyed it, too.

 

But, yeah, TNG has some of my favorite episodes of the entire franchise. Overall, it's my favorite.

 

I've never re-watched DS9. I never can get past Red Bathrobe Guy, as we refer to him. And I stopped watching it the first time around during the last season when it got stupid. But DS9 DID have some of the best mirror universe episodes.

I loved TNG from the first. My parents would even record it on the VCR so that I wouldn't miss an episode. I may even still have some of those old tapes somewhere around here. I love Picard, Data, and Q. I even like Troy, but boy is her mom annoying! I still ship Picard and Crusher so much! My favorite all time episode is The Naked Now from season one, but The Inner Light is right there with it.

 

I watched DS9, but never liked it as much as TNG, and I just couldn't do Voyager or Enterprise. They just didn't have the same magic as TNG did for me. I think I was out growing it by that time as well.

 

My favorite movie of the original series is The Undiscovered Country, and my favorite movie of TNG is Insurrection.

 

I haven't seen Babylon 5 or Stargate SG-1, so I am going to have to check them out. I watched the newer Battlestar Galactica and fell in love with it. I cried so much at the end!

Yay for the mirror episodes. Love those. I loved the first Mirror Mirror, so when the revisited that universe in DS9, I thought it was great. I've seen little of the last season, but I agree, it was weird. Coming up on that in a few episodes.

 

 

 

 

 

I still have my tapes of original airings of TNG. I've had to throw some away, they were worn out, but still have others.

 

 

 

Need to check out battles tar galactic a, used to watch the original.

Meh. I like TOS, though I always am left wanting more, more, more Majel Barrett. I tolerate TNG: The episodes are far more engaging if you miss the first 15 minutes. However, DS9 was downright intriguing, at least until TNG wrapped up and its writers took over and Worf came with them (I do like Worf, just not in DS9). I don't know who makes me more tingly, Jadzia or Gul Dukat. And Sisko is my Captain. Oh, yeah.

 

After DS9, my interest waned.

I have a cousin who named his daughter Anika they had no idea about 7 of 9.

 

Voyager is my favorite of all the Star Trek series. My most favorite sci-fi show of all time is Stargate SG-1 though. While Richard Dean Anderson was fine, the one I really liked was Michael Shanks.

 

Yes! And Teal'c! :svengo: :001_wub: It's an inside joke with dh that he's not suppose to look at girls in bikinis in movies and I'm not suppose to look at Christopher Judge with his shirt off. :D

Okay, I said I haven't re-watched DS9, but I suddenly remembered last year watching Past Tense, which is the episode when Sisko, Julian, and Dax end up in old-to-them/our-future Earth in the Sanctuary zones. It was eery since the Occupy movement was in the news a lot at the time -- it was sort of like watching what COULD be our current events, complete with access to social media making a difference.

 

Also, I refuse to re-watch TNG Chain of Command. It's too intense for me.

My favorite episode was Darmok.

 

I watched the original ST when it was new. Yes, I'm old. When TNG first aired, I started watching it out of respect, lol, and eventually I came to love it. Never could get into DS9. I'm streaming it on Netflix to see what I missed, but it still hasn't clicked for me. *Loved* Voyager. Endured Enterprise, because what's not to love about Scott Bakula? Was definitely a SG9 groupie, and never cared that much for B5. :-)

I see it's spelled differently. How do they pronounce it? My dd is AH-nih-kuh 3rd sound of a, short i and u. We've had a lot of people call her AN-ih-kuh like she was named after Anakin Skywalker, or the worst for us is when someone calls her uh-NEE-kuh.

I am the product of two Science Fiction lovers. One day at church my Mom walked past my Dad and heard him say "I grok that". Mom stopped and said "You've read 'Stranger in a Strange Land?" and he said "YOU'VE read 'Stranger in a Strange Land?" From this encounter, I have life. LOL

 

Dad Introduced Mom to Star Trek. I remember them getting more excited about the cartoon version than I did when it came on tv on Saturdays. To say I speak Trek is an understatement.

 

Of the series this is my list of favorites, in order

Enterprise (still canon after the reboot involving the most recent Star Trek movie)

DS9 (lots of religion talk)

Original Series (nostalgia)

TNG ( a little to preachy for me)

Voyager (Janeway whined too much for my liking)

 

I suggest getting into the modern Doctor Who shoes. You can easily start with the Ninth Doctor and work from there. It's upbeat, smart, funny, and fun IMO.

 

As for SG1 I LOVE the 100th episode the best. Next up would be the 200th episode. Oi were those funny. To this day if I see either episode is playing I stop and watch it.
