I'm thinking of opening an etsy shop to sell some homemade crafts. I'm not looking to make tons of money, but just an outlet for my creative streak so I don't end up with a stock pile of things in my house.

Would you buy something like this. It's a crocheted cotton washcloth you can wrap a bar of soap in to use as a scrubbie. It takes me about 30 minutes to make one and the supplies are about $1.50 in yarn, thread and a button.

I'm trying to do this as a poll, I sure hope it works.

Handmade soapmaker here, I used to have a small business selling it.

I would be concerned about bacteria if it stayed in the washcloth as well as the fact that handmade and high glycerin content soaps melt really quickly if not allowed to dry out between uses.

I would think you would need to use a totally synthetic yarn, and have the holes big enough to allow air flow and maybe a loop for hanging it after use.

I think just a cute simple washcloth with fun colors and cool patterns or edging would be awesome.

Or even ones made with silk or bamboo or organic threads.

That being said I think those packaged with a hard, high coconut oil or lard soap would be a cute gift!! Maybe not intended to be used and kept wrapped up like that in the tub or shower.

Thanks for the input. Maybe they would be better as a go along with a homemade soap item that would be used open as a wash cloth. If you undo the wrapping it does have the button loop you could hang it from to dry.

I use handmade soap and have a few different soap bags. I wouldn't undo this item to dry after every use. My current soap bags are pretty open with the holes so the soap doesn't melt too fast. Even my glycerin bars do well in my current bags. They are some kind of hemp material in one.

But I think it's cute. I would probably buy one but if it wasn't as good as what I use already I wouldn't continue to use it.

I think in your case....search for soap bags on homemade soap sites and see what theirs look like. Then make something similar to sell yourself.

Thanks I'll work on a pattern with a more open texture.

It looks like a crocheted tawashi. I buy these. There are shops on Etsy by the dozens that sell them. I don't think I would buy it to use with soap for some of the reasons already said - bacteria, soaps melting... Maybe just jump on the tawashi wagon and sell them as that?

With homemade soap I see people making and selling "felted soap" but I think something like this would cause the soap to melt quickly and get goopy.

I think I would go with felted soaps or those little scrubby things.

But I can make soap, I crochet and knit so I tend not to buy that sort of thing unless I REALLY do not want to do it.

Thanks all for your input. I've decided to stick with the little scrubby things and some basic dishclothes/washclothes. I think I'll just work on making some and when I have a dozen or so then I'll test the waters with an etsy store and see what comes of it. Like I said I'm not looking to make a full time income or anything, just basically a way for me to do something crafty while watching tv or something without filling my house to the brim.
