Renthead Mommy
In having a discussion about something the cost of cigarettes came up. In high school I remember a pack of Marlboros was around $2.50-$3.00. What does a pack cost today? What does a carton cost?
Crimson Wife
I don't know what a carton cost at a place like Costco's but a pack of cigarettes at the gas station are $5 something here.
Carrie12345
About $7 in PA. More in NJ. Your first born in Manhattan. ($1.95 when I was a teenager in NJ.) The variation in tax by state is enormous.
melissad2
I think about $3.50/pk for the cheapo brand and around $4.50/marlboros. I don't know how anyone affords the nasty little habit.
Tarreymere
45 cents when my mom used to send me down to the corner store to pick some up for her...... $5.65 in my corner of PA these days.
Lovin Learnin
Dating myself but one summer when I was in college I worked at a gas station and cigarettes were $.89 per pack. I believe they are in excess of $5 now where I live.
amy g.
I was just talking to the check out boy about this. I told him that when I was in high school everyone said, "If they go up to $1.00 a pack, I'm quitting, Man."
Annie G
Not sure if the chart I saw is still accurate, but it listed Missouri at 17 cents tax (the lowest cig tax in the states)per pack, and Rhode Island as the highest tax per pack at $3.50 per pack. That of course doesn't include the federal tax. But when local taxes are added, New York City rates the highest at $5.85 per pack. So in NYC the tax is higher than the product, right?? I wonder if the percentage of smokers is lower in states where the tax rate is high... Edited October 26, 2012 by Annie G

Guest inoubliable
About $3.50/pack here in tobacco-land. I remember them being about $2/pack when I was a teenager. I went out to Utah for college and, this is what I was told anyway, the state was gearing up for the 2002 Winter Olympics out there so they had recently raised taxes on some things, cigarettes included. Packs out there were $5+/pack. When I went home for winter break, I came back to Utah with an extra suitcase filled with cartons of cigarettes. Just about everyone I knew there had given me a $20 and asked me to bring them back cigarettes.
Annie G
These prices make me feel better about my $0.52 a day Pepsi Max habit.

Robin The car payment comment is sort of along the lines of the original conversation my husband and I were having and that is what led to my original question. Guest inoubliable
These prices are insane. I'm so glad DH and I recently quit.
Elizabeth in MN
Here they cheap ones are over $5 a pack. Back when my Dad was alive we drove by a gas station advertising a carton for $40. I clucked and hissed about how happy I was for having quit before it was over $20 a carton. My Dad chuckled and said "I remember when they were fifteen cents a pack." Needless to say, he died from smoking.
Lizzie in Ma
I think I saw Marlboros for $8 the other day, we have insane sin taxes in MA. I recall saying that I would quite when they hit a dollar when I was in high school quite well. I quit about 7 or 8 years ago now I think. Thank God. MomtoCandJ
5.35 for Pall Malls unless you go to Murphy's then they are 4.98 a pack (includes tax) in Michigan. Not sure about cartons. In Georgia the same brand was 3.20 a pack at Enmark (includes tax) again not sure about cartons.
Holly
Ours are about $8-9 here. My dad told me his work buddies are now rolling their own using pipe tobacco because it's cheaper. I can't see how anyone can afford to smoke a pack a day.

I think they should be more.

justLisa
I was just talking to the check out boy about this. I told him that when I was in high school everyone said, "If they go up to $1.00 a pack, I'm quitting, Man.":lol::lol: I remember in HS they were around $2 a pack but I could go to this place and get a carton for pretty cheap. That was for Marb's. GROSS to think of how I used to smoke. Here and now? about $8 a pack
Geo
I started smoking very young (1969), at .45 a pack...and I quit before getting pregnant when I was 27, at $1.50 a pack. Since then, I can't stand anything "owning" me. I can be pretty obstinate when I feel something has a control over me. Sometimes, being oppositional has it's benefits. ;)
LucyStoner
No one in my family smokes. My mother died due to lung cancer in 2009. I was always amazed by how much she paid for her cigarette habit. I noted the other day while waiting outside at a gas station that packs here were north of $7 for name brand and not much less generics. blakereese
I was just talking to the check out boy about this. I told him that when I was in high school everyone said, "If they go up to $1.00 a pack, I'm quitting, Man." We were getting gas recently and I noticed a sign for Marlboro's and it was around $8 a pack. I was shocked!! I've never smoked, but I did buy them for my mom as a youngster (yeh, those were the good ole days ) and I thought I remembered them being $1 or $2. How do people afford such a habit? I know, I know, priorities and all that. But there is no way I would be able to support a pack a day habit. Just THINK of all the books that money could buy! :D
