:001_smile:

I hope someone else finds this useful. Our plan is to have a more creative Friday. We're thinking poetry, Spencerian Cursive, French homework, nature studies, piano, etc.

Hopefully this list will keep me on track to getting projects done. We'll see how it goes!

I had planned to do a year long orchestra, opera, ballet study. But the real theme of the year is Keep It Simple!!!

So, I decided it weave it into a year of arts and crafts, neat books, music (we like to create to French pop :tongue_smilie:), youtube clips, etc.

I could keep cleaning it up and refining it (it needs it), but I've just got to stop working on it. It started to make my head hurt. :tongue_smilie:

We'll still be hitting the theater, museums, concerts, and gardens during the school year.

This is my attempt at giving my kids what they asked for in school. They don't mind doing the tougher school work, but they want to do creative stuff too. I hope following this schedule will create the mood they're looking for. I purposely kept it easy peasy, there's no hard reading or memorizing dates, nothing like that.

Now, I'm going to plan out nature studies. :w00t:

If you don't mind would you also post your plans for nature studies? It would be a great reference for ideas!

I'd be happy to! I'm working on it right now. It's going to be very simple, and also a Friday only thing.

This is my first time planning out like this. Does planning down to the detail work?

I think you were smart to plan down to the detail, because when I have tried to "add in art & music", it works until we get too busy, and then gets forgotten, because I don't have it all planned out. I am so thankful for this, and I am so going to duplicate it! I had a bunch of Waldorf craft sites & tutorials that I put on my Pinterest page for just that purpose, and now you have done my hard work for me!!

What age are your dc?

I like your plan. Can I use it?

They'll be 11 and 13 in the fall.

Yes! Please use what ever you can from this schedule. It makes me happy to know that this might save someone some time and work. :001_smile:

I'm working on nature studies... :willy_nilly:

I wanted to quickly post this amazing link (thanks to Jenny in Florida). You can watch performances live in HD from The Metropolitan Opera, in your (hopefully) local theater. I'm planning to add this in as well.

http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/liveinhd/unitedstates.aspx

Hope this comes in handy to someone. :001_smile:

I hereby send you a virtual kiss (<3) from this newbie HS mom. As others have said, without your work and generosity I probably would not have gotten to the arts this year. Many, many thanks for sharing!

  • 10 months later...

Overall it was a big hit. I'll be doing a similar plan again this year.

What worked:

- Having this schedule printed out and put in a folder was awesome! We used a highlighter to mark off everything we completed.

- Having it on the computer was nice to have quick access to the youtube links.

- There was no stress gathering materials. I already had most things on hand, and because I was so organized , it was easy to pick up the few remaining supplies.

- I loved knowing which books/dvds we owned, and which ones I needed from the library.

- Because art day was on Friday, it was easy to let it flow into the weekend.

- It felt like we did a little of everything, nothing was left out.

What didn't work:

- Some of the projects were painful to complete.

- Some (though very few) were never done. They say it'll all get done this summer.

- A few of the youtube links didn't work by the time we got to them.

- Some of it felt like a project we've already done a million times.

- No real (serious) art technique instruction... no mastering a skill.

- No fine art study, mostly handicrafts

There's probably a lot of good and bad I'm forgetting, but this is it in a nut shell.

Right away I realized my mistake in not enough fine arts. I scored on a few sets of big art prints and converted a big bulletin board into a picture study space. I printed and mounted the title of the work, and the name, country, and photo of painter. Every so often I'd take out a few new prints and have the girls choose an old print to come down (very fun for some reason :tongue_smilie: )and a new one to go up on the board. Then we'd take turns asking questions from a list I printed up: "Why did you choose to take that painting down?", "How do the colors affect the painting?"

*Computer's acting weird.. posting this and finishing in a new post!!*

The other thing I did was order all the Dover art sticker books (during a sale) and had the girls add them into their timelines. Sooo... history-ish, art. :)

http://store.doverpublications.com/by-subject-stationery--seasonal-books--gift-sets-fine-art-stickers.html

It was a fun project! They picked out one or more of their favorites from each book.

We also did some Sister Wendy DVDs.

My plans for next year??

I'll stick with the same format. I like the "do this thing at this time."

The picture study board is here to stay.

I bought some albums and have tons of postcards to do this: http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com/2009/07/our-picture-studies.html (scroll down to bottom)

Sister Wendy was a big hit. We were unbelievably sick when we watched them, and I don't know, is it weird to have more of those set aside as what we do when we have the plague? :)

I want to cover the basic art movements. It would be kind of fun to make a matching game of pictures and titles from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_art_movements. Hmmm...

I'm thinking of making it more of a seasonal schedule and not just art. I got a massive stack of old Martha Stewart magazines for free and I've been tearing out everything I like. There's seasonal cooking and beverages, seasonal handicrafts, seasonal gardening. I kind of like that idea, especially since fine art is kind of taking on a different life of its own. We're cozy people, I think the seasonal thing adds warmth.

I can't believe how much we did this year! I have all kinds of beautiful projects, even better, lots of great memories! I'll post pics if I can figure out how to do it on the new boards.

This is wonderful! I posted in this last summer then forgot all about it. So I'm glad for the reminder, as I really want to incorporate more going forward. Love the idea of adding seasonal things to the rotation.

Thanks! :)

I'd be happy to post the new schedule when I'm done with it. I'm hoping for a lot of fresh ideas and projects.
