Singapore MPH Science TG necessary?

I recently read in another thread that the TG isn't really necessary. Is that true even if you get the HOTS? They aren't so difficult that a reasonably intelligent parent couldn't figure out the answers without the TG, right? lol Is there a lot of enrichment in the TGs? What, exactly, is in there that is worth $70ish bucks?

I haven't started it yet. I bought it for this coming school year, but we probably won't start until around January (I also have some RSO I want to do in the fall). I almost bought the MPH TG, but talked myself out of it when I saw my checkout total at RR. So I am hoping we can get away with not using it. :D

You could, but.. :) There are many lesson plans, ideas, and Internet links in the guide. It ties everything together, and has smaller versions of the activity guide and books so you can follow right along when dc are reading. I wouldn't skip it, as to me it adds value tremendously to the program, but quite a few on this board I believe do without. It's up to you.

I'd say More Notes is not necessary, but I think you'll lose out some if you don't use the Teacher's Guide.

We're finishing up MPH 3/4. There's one guide for all 5 books. In 5/6 (starting next week), there's a separate guide for each of the 4 books.

HW, HOTS, and Tests all have the answers in the back. There's one book for all the texts.

The HW is pretty straight-forward based on the text. The HOTS is significantly more challenging and sometimes has information that is only presented in the TG. In one case from 5/6, the material that was on a test is only in the Background Information for Teachers in the front of the TG.

In my experience, MPH is not open and go. There are some additional labs in the TG. The TG has a few websites, but more websites are listed in the More Notes, although some aren't there any longer. I use the Singapore grading scale for the HOTS and Tests. They definitely ask questions at a high level.

You can also use the tags or a search for a number of prior threads on the TG with Singapore.

 This makes me nervous since it is out of stock at SM and christianbook.com Anyone know where I can find it online or in a sale swap?

Rainbow resource. Here

Maybe they're going to a revised edition, since TM is listed as permanently out of stock at Singapore Math.

Interesting...
