My son is 7 and listens to audiobooks on his ipod all the time. I am running out of ideas and the search is massive!

He is finishing up Aesop's fables and I have Beautiful Stories up next

I also finally figured out that the child's homer is: the adventures of odyseuss and the tale of troy :tongue_smilie:

He also recently finished Pinocchio and the secret garden.

Feel free to add so others can find some good books too!

I listen to Librivox recordings while walking the puppy in the mornings.

Just today I finished listening to Puck of Pook's Hill by Kipling. It was written for children but fantastic. The narrator was wonderful and Kipling...well, I had no idea what a delightful sentences he could compose. I had read Just So Stories years ago, but they were just so compared to this one. :) I have also recently enjoyed:

Little Women & Little Men (since it is about boys and their scrapes, your ds might enjoy the latter...not all the narrators were the same, some better than others)

Anne of Green Gables & Anne of Avonlea (former was a more enjoyable story to me)

Pride & Prejudice read by Karen Savage, as recommended here

The Dragon & The Raven, if you've heard one Henty, you've heard them all, but I like King Alfred

In searching for the Dragon & the Raven link, I see they have My Father's Dragon! That is a good story for a 7yo. And The Reluctant Dragon also. I don't know if I've read that one. Perhaps I'll start it tomorrow. :)

Without knowing WHAT he's listened to, LOL, here goes:

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan

Kane Chronicles series by Rick Riordan

Christopher Paolini's books (poorly written fluff, but fun to listen to)

Rudyard Kipling (no joke, I think all kids need to hear/read Kipling, now this does depend on his maturity as for what....)

~ The Jungle Book

~ The Second Jungle Book

~ Just So Stories

~ Rikki Tikki Tavi

~ Kim *(we did this at 10....I don't remember why though.)

~ The Man Who Would Be King **(semi-graphic death; ds at 10 loved it and dd at 11 hasn't listened to it)

~ Captains Courageous *(coming of age type story, some harsh descriptions --- not for a sensitive boy, but great for a boy-boy)

~ Puck of Pook's Hill

Peter and the Starcatchers series by Dave Berry & Ridley Pearson

Several other books by Dave Berry & Ridley Pearson

Treasure Island

Redwall series by Brian Jacques

The Story of Doctor Dolittle series by Hugh Lofting

Gail Carson Levine's books (mind you, these are "girl books".....)

~ Ella Enchanted

~ Fairest

~ The Tale of Two Castles

~ Ever

~ Dave at NIght (haven't read this one and it IS about a boy)

~ Several others that I haven't read either

Pam Munoz Ryan books

~ Esperanza Rising (slightly sad, but good)

~ Paint the Wind

~ Riding Freedom

~ Few others

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming (as in 007)

Elizabeth George Speare's books **(several of these are Sonlight books....)

~ The Bronze Bow

~ The Sign of the Beaver

~ The Witch of Blackbird Pond

~ NOTE: I am NOT including Calico Captive in this list.... it is a *really* good book, BUT, there is one graphic scene in the book which makes it on my NO list. I warn people of this every time I see this book. My ds at 10 didn't care --and still wouldn't, he isn't really sensitive-- _I_ bawled my eyes out and couldn't read for several minutes afterwards, and my dd11 hasn't heard it yet and if I have my way WILL NOT. PM me if you want to know.

Edith Nesbit's books (NOTE: Nesbit was a flaming socialist. It shows in her stories.)

~ The Railway Children

~ The Phoenix and the Carpet

~ The Story of the Treasure Seekers

~ Five Children and It

~ Supernatural Horror Stories *(Now, I included this one because we love it in my family. They are so-so scary and are fun to listen to.... BUT..... check it out for yourself first. Many people I've recommended this to have vetoed it. Again, _I_ grew up with this....)

~ The Enchanted Castle

~ The Story of the Amulet

~ The Wouldbegoods

~ The Treasure Seekers

Beverly Cleary books

Lois Lowry books *(NOTE: you'll need to weed through these, he might be too young yet)

Marguerite Henry's books

~ NOT naming all of those...I don't even think I can mentally name them all.

~ Misty of Chin-something-or-another

~ A ton of horse stories

From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Something-or-another by ?.?. Konigsburg

John Flanagan's books (mostly decently written fluff, but fun fluff)

The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Stewart

Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss

Kate DiCamillo books

~ Tale of Despereaux

~ Because of Winn-Dixie

~ The ___________ ____________ of Edward Tulane

~ The Magician's Elephant (I haven't read it)

~ The Tiger Rising (again, haven't read it)

Anne of Green Gables series (again, girl's book)

Wind in the Willows by um.....(crud, I can't remember who wrote that...I could look it up, but that's more work than I'm interested in LOL)

The Reluctant Dragon by the same dude above one

Dealing with Dragons series by Patricia Wrede (silly series about princesses and dragons, but even my "that's-a-girl's-book" hating son loved the series)

The Once and Future King by TS White (If you haven't read this, you should listen along. My son received it for his 8th birthday and loved it....but my dh hadn't ever read it.)

Ahhhh, I had a few others but the computer ate them........

Good luck and let me know how many of these he hasn't heard yet.....if you need more I'll look in our iTunes listings.

Librivox selections my younger kids have loved:

Dr. Doolittle

Voyages of Dr. Doolittle

Be aware that the original editions of Dr Dolittle contain a section where a black prince wants to become white to win the princess.

Here's the link for Lit2 Go. The narrators are more professional in many cases than on Librivox, which has a higher tolerance for errors and has varying narrators. It's a better organized site, too, and they have categories you can browse, so I recommend looking at it.

Daniel Pinkwater has an audio archive too http://www.pinkwater.com/podcast/audioarchive.php

My library has some nice books (including newer ones) on cd. My kids listened to Rabbit Ears' collection of folk tales -- including American tall tales -- and some of E Nesbit. They are also generally better than free downloads, but of course, your library's collection may vary and it's not as convenient as a download.
