General Questions about Omnibus

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have 4 children, grades 2nd - 6th. I am thinking ahead about starting Omnibus I in 2015 and hoping to gleam wisdom from all of your experiences.

My questions are this: Having 3 younger students at the same time, will keeping up with the reading for me be doable? For those of you who also teach omnibus, do you, as the teacher, need to read all of the primary and secondary books?

Before deciding on Omnibus, did you consider other programs like SL,HO, TOG, and why did you ultimately decide to move forward with Omni? Have you it been what you expected?

Would you recommend buying the books early so that I have time to read through them? (remember I have 3 younger students also)

Would you recommend going in order? Must I start with Omni I? I hear that some start with Omni II because the content is "easier". I am not sure what that means.

Becasue I will be starting in 7th grade, could I take my time going through it and still finish it by the end of 12th grade?

My husband and I are really impressed by what we have seen/heard about Omni so far and believe that it fits our family well. I just need to wrap my head around everything. I don't want to bite of more than I can chew.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Jackie

Hi Jackie, welcome to the boards! In addition to the answers you'll get here, remember there are great yahoo groups, one for VP_Elementary and the other VP_Omnibus. :)

I don't know if you know this, but VP actually has a self-paced, online Omnibus I course in the works. They already have the *live* classes, but this will be self-paced, much like the AMAZING self-paced elementary sequence. I don't know if you've ever thought of using it, but it is a HUGE hit in our house. They give multi-child discounts and even ran a $99 deal a few months ago. For the last few years they've done a free one month trial in the fall, and that's a great way to try it out.

Anyways, I called to ask them about it, because of course we're heading to that point ourselves (finishing up the VP lower history sequence finally!), and they said there's no promised date when it will be ready but that they are actually FILMING it. It's being shot on location, all over the world, which really blows my mind with excitement frankly. The lower levels have been so fun and interactive, I'm just waiting to see what they can do when they have these books and the actual locations to boot. Wow.

So it *might* be that the self-paced courses will be ready when you need them two years from now. If not, you could do a year of geography (our plan) and come back to Omnibus/GB after that. As far as reading ahead, I definitely think that's wise. I got Omnibus I and II a couple years ago and started going some of the reading just so I'd have an opinion on what the books were, where they fit into our values, etc. I'm not a history person though, and frankly I'm just as happy to toss it off to VP if they get that self-paced ready. I don't even care if it matches up perfectly with what we're doing, lol. When it comes out, we'll do it.

Don't know if that gets you anywhere in your planning, but there you go. :)

Thanks OhElizabeth for you great reply! I am so excited about a self-paced omnibus!! Next school year my oldest dd will be finishing up the last self-paced history (1815-modern). My dds have really enjoyed it. They have completed 2 of them already.

Because we live in China, the live classes are out of the question. We are sleeping during class times ;)

I am considering going ahead and ordering Omnibus I with the CD and the primary books so that I can have the next year to be working on the readings myself. I actually wrote the wrong date in my original post. My dd will be starting 7th grade in fall 2013. She is really looking for a challenge! She is an avid reader and a lover of all things history, literature, and theology.

I have posted my questions on the VP_omnibus board but I only received one reply so I thought I might get some more info from here. Thanks again for you reply!
