Penny from Tenny
My head is already hurting from some sort of a weird, dizzying (is that a word?) viral thing I caught from my son's nurse, so I have not taken the time to do a lengthy search....has anyone used this as their spine for highschool history? Do you have a schedule you would want to share? Just trying to think of whether to do this alone for history or use it in MFW AHL instead of Notgrass. We loved SOTW for earlier years and wish there was a study guide for highschool level using this. Did I mention my head was hurting?

Son will (upcoming freshman) will be doing AHL from MFW. I am debating on adding SWB History of the Ancient world as I wanted so badly to get her books for high school. My oldest didn't have them as the books were not aval at the time we needed it. I am also debating whether to use Notgrass or not....sigh :lurk5::lurk5: Holly
Penny from Tenny
And when I said a "stand alone" I guess I should clarify that it would be used in conjunction with reading literature from the time period with writing assignments, etc. I already own Greenleaf's guide to Ancient Literature and could use it also. I'm just not sure I can justify the price of MFW AHL when I don't want to use Notgrass and would have to "tweak". Hopefully someone will chime in and help us. DS will read 3 chapters per week and complete the recs in rhetoric stage TWTM, creating a page for each chapter with key dates, people and events. I'll have him write an essay on a topic in further depth once per week or so. I don't think it needs to be more complicated than that. I hope it doesn't. :001_smile: We will also be doing great books from the time period according to TWTM.

You are probably right - overthinking and overplanning is one of my character flaws. ;) You would think I would have learned by now. Thanks for the input! orangearrow
My 14yo dd is using this right now. She's covering the Ancients from April through August, and will move to the Medieval book for the whole of next year. She is *loving* it. She's retaining what she's reading. We bought both the hardback version and the Kindle version, she loves the Kindle because it's lightweight, but will pull out the hardback whenever she needs to find something quickly, or wants to look at a map close-up. She's reading 4 chapters per week.
Starr
My dd loved this book. She used it for history when she was 14 or 15.
Penny from Tenny
I pulled out my copy of The Well-Trained Mind and am going to go over the highschool recommendations again. We are already incorporating some of her suggestions, but your posts have encouraged me to reconsider this route for history instead of a package curriculum. How much time did your child take to read and follow the history and summary writing recommendations? I know she suggests 10 hours/week - could an average student do all that in that time frame? I think the ten hours is for both history and great books. I'm guessing for Luke the history reading/summary writing will take 3-4 hours , and the great books portion will occupy the remainder of the time.
