Could my ds be having seizures?

Recommended Posts

Ds11 has mentioned to me a few times that he "spaces out" sometimes. It happened recently when he was walking down the stairs, he said, and he missed a step. These moments seem to last merely a few seconds, and then he feels fine.

I am starting to wonder if this is something to talk to the doctor about. Some kind of little seizures?? He has other issues, like sensory processing, a language disorder, etc.

Any ideas?

This certainly describes a type of seizure - absence seizures (used to be called petit mal) - and I'd recommend speaking to his doctor about them. They have a characteristic pattern on EEG, and are often outgrown.

Yes. After asking him more about it, he describes it as "spacing out and going limp". We have noticed there are times he doesn't seem to hear us, or seems confused and frustrated in a conversation; we thought that was his language disorder, but maybe he "spaced out"?

Definitely will call the doctor. Thanks.

Just a hint------if your doctor agrees that seizures might be an issue, see if they will order the EEG for you while you wait to see the peds. neurologist. Then if something DOES show up on the EEG you will be bumped to the top of the list and get in much sooner (the wait can be months around here) and if it is clear, you will have that information when you meet with the neurologist and then can look at other things.

I have learned a lot of tricks on how to get in to specialists sooner, make the best of the appointments, etc.

I took ds11 to the family doctor today, to discuss what ds describes as "spacing out and going limp". I want to rule out seizures. She did some little tests in the office, all of which were normal, so she doesn't think he has a brain tumor! She said absence seizures were a possibility, though, so now we will see a pediatric neurologist.
